Welcome to Canggu's cooler, quieter neighbourhood. These are my top recommendations if you're making a stop in Pererenan.
I first moved to Bali in 2006, and I’ve watched Canggu evolve from a sleepy, off-the-grid surf town into a full-blown tourist hotspot. And while the energy of Canggu is electric, it can get chaotic – fast. That’s why, whenever I spend a few days in this part of Bali, I prefer Pererenan. In fact, Pererenan was recently named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world by Time Out. So, if you’re wondering where to stay, eat and play in this quieter pocket of Canggu, here’s my go-to Pererenan travel guide, covering the best hotels, villas, restaurants and things to do in Pererenan, Canggu..
Why trust this guide
I’ve spent plenty of time exploring Pererenan’s backstreets, beach cafés, and boutique hotels — not just passing through, but actually eating, staying, and living it. These are my real recommendations — not just the Instagram version — based on what I’ve tried, tested, and keep coming back to.

Best Hotel: Further Hotel
Design-led boutique stay in Pererenan with statement architecture and serene, artful suites.

Woven into its surrounding community in Pererenan, Further Hotel is truly impressive. Starting with its unique architecture – when I spotted it, I knew instantly it was a Further building. You’ll find a spacious living room equipped with Bluetooth speakers, a bespoke minibar, a plush bed and a brick-blocked bathroom with an open-air shower and custom-made amenities by Oaken Lab.
Insider tip: Further is a diffuse hotel – meaning it consists of a few buildings all located on the same street. I would stay at Further Gallery if I wanted to be closer to the beach, Further Studio for privacy, and Further Hotel for more suite options.

They’ve got their complete cafe menu here, plus all of their fresh-outta-the-oven artisanal sourdough, and oh-so buttery croissants. FYI, their coffee is a strong Arabica brew, perfect for a pre-workout caffeine fix. You can sit on the outdoor patio, or grab-and-go, and have a picnic on the beach.

It has all the amenities and facilities you need from a hotel: an in-house restaurant serving healthy food, a traditional Balinese spa, a rooftop hangout spot and a coworking space. But, I think the hotel’s best feature is its infinity pool, which overlooks its very own rice paddies in the backyard.

It also slings your typical brunch fare, but you absolutely must go for the breakfast dosas. There are three to choose from, and they are all mind-blowing.

The Best Restaurants in Pererenan for Dinner
1. Shelter Pererenan
Wood-fired Middle Eastern restaurant with breezy tropical vibes and date-night ambiance.

Dreamy nighttime vibes, breezy tropical surrounds, and Middle Eastern-inspired food with a contemporary twist – Shelter Pererenan knows how to set the mood for an intimate dinner date. I can’t get enough of their hot-from-the-oven flat bread – AKA the perfect vehicle for that fluffy whipped chickpeas and smokey babaghanoush.
Wood-firing is what they do best, so you’ll want to try their specialties like the wood-roasted scallops and ribeyes. Even the desserts get a taste of the flames, including the Wood Fired Chocolate, which I’ve travelled all the way to Pererenan for, just to try it (and it was worth the journey!).
Must-try dishes: Whipped Chickpeas, Lamb Kofte, Wood-Roasted Moon Scallop, Wood-Roasted Chocolate.

2. Origen
Bold Mexican restaurant with handmade tortillas, mezcal cocktails and striking interiors.

You simply can’t miss Origen, one of the most breathtaking restaurants in Pererenan. And just as bold as its decor is its vibrant Mexican food, which uses Bali’s freshest ingredients and authentic Mexican spices. You know the food is legit because they handmake their own corn tortillas, but when I tasted it, it exceeded all expectations.
Try the perfectly seared tuna tostadas, and the slow-cooked beef birria with melted mozzarella. The snapper ceviche is also a winner, while the churros are downright addictive. And of course, no Mexican feast in Bali would be complete without a mezcal margarita…
Must-try dishes: Tostada de Atun, Tacos Quesa Birria, Ceviche Mexicano, Churros.
Best for: Incredible interiors, authentic Mexican food and potent margaritas.
Price: Large plates start from IDR 150,000.
Address: Jl Pantai Pererenan No. 123, Pererenan.
Opening Hours: Daily, from 11am.
3. Optimist
Architectural dining spot serving modern Asian cuisine, natural wines and creative cocktails.

I first came across Optimist on a lazy walk toward Pererenan Beach — and yes, the architecture is a showstopper. But this spot isn’t just about looks. Behind the bold design is a neighbourhood restaurant that knows exactly what it’s doing, especially when it comes to modern, Asian-inspired food and natural wine.
I’ve eaten here more than once, and what keeps me coming back is the attention to detail. Handmade noodles, perfectly cooked duck breast, sashimi sliced to order, and house-fermented kimchi. The drinks list is just as considered, and they even host regular bar takeovers. I ordered the Southern East, followed by the Kyoto Monsoon – a coconut-forward cocktail topped with matcha foam. If you’re more into natural wines, there are pét-nats, juicy skin-contact whites, and bold reds.
And because I’m a sucker for detail, I loved choosing my own vintage glass from their eclectic collection. Set that down on one of the hand-assembled mosaic tables from Paris, and you’ll soon understand why I love this Pererenan must-try.
Must-try dishes: Shrimp tartare, duck breast.
Best for: Asian-inspired dining with creative cocktails and standout designs.
Price: Mains start from IDR 120,000.
Address: Jl Pantai Pererenan No. 166, Pererenan.
Opening Hours: Daily, from 4pm.
Things to do in Pererenan
1. Surf at Pererenan Beach
Laid-back black sand beach known for surf breaks, fewer crowds and epic Bali sunsets.

Stretching 500 metres to the west of Echo Beach, Pererenan Beach is worth a visit, especially for the avid surfers. Thanks to its stronger waves and fewer crowds, this beach is a favourite among seasoned local and foreign surfers alike. But, I head here for its spectacular sunset – it’s a panoramic backdrop against barreling waves and black sands. Come nightfall, settle in and enjoy the romantic ambiance with a hot date.
2. Shop at Pererenan’s top fashion stores
Boutique shopping hub for island-born fashion brands, slow labels and trend-led designs.

There’s always something to shop in the Canggu area, with so many cute boutiques and island-born brands. My favourite in Pererenan? The sultry, nude-coloured dresses from Flook The Label. But why stop there? We’ve rounded up the best fashion stores in Canggu here.
3. Workout at the best gyms in Pererenan
State-of-the-art fitness hubs offering strength training, classes and recovery facilities.

The gym community in Pererenan isn’t as big as those in the central Canggu areas. There’s only a handful of state-of-the-art gyms here – I found Rite Gym (previously Wrong Gym) to be one of the most well-equipped in the area. It’s a holistic wellness centre, complete with cardio and weightlifting machines, free weights, and even a dedicated room to practice boxing skills. Daily yoga, pilates and other fitness classes are also available. And in true Canggu gym style, they’ve got a recovery area (yes, there is a sauna, steam room, swimming pool and cold plunge!) and a healthy cafe, too.
4. Day trip to nearby Bali must-visit spots
Easy day trips to beach clubs, temples, creative hubs and iconic Bali destinations.
Conveniently located in the southwestern part of Bali, Pererenan is a good, calm base yet near where the action is. Here are the must-visit places in Bali you can easily get to from Pererenan, in less than one hour:
- Central Canggu (10 minutes): Bali’s hub for beach clubs, night clubs and some of the best restaurants on the island.
- Tanah Lot Temple (30 minutes): One of the most famous Hindu temples in Bali. It uniquely sits on a rock off-shore, making it look as if it’s floating on the sea.
- Nuanu Creative City & Pantai Nanyi Beach (30 minutes): Visionary beachfront destination for art, culture, sustainability and immersive creative experiences in Bali.
- Seminyak (45 minutes): Trendy Bali hotspot known for luxury villas, high-end shopping, trendy dining and vibrant nightlife.

FAQs about Pererenan, Canggu
Where is Pererenan?
Pererenan is located just north of the vibrant Canggu area. From Berawa Beach it takes approximately 15 minutes by scooter, or 10 minutes from Batu Bolong. If you're coming straight from the airport, it may take you one to two hours, depending on traffic.
Are there beginner-friendly surf spots in Pererenan?
Unfortunately no, Pererenan Beach is known for its slightly more advanced surf breaks, due to some stronger currents and rocks. But don’t worry, just a short scooter ride away, Batu Bolong offers gentler waves and plenty of surf schools for beginners.
How does Pererenan compare to Canggu?
Compared to Canggu, Pererenan offers a more laid-back atmosphere. It has all the charm (boho stores, artisan coffee, boutique hotels and surf-friendly beaches) but without the heavy traffic and party crowds. If you love Canggu’s lifestyle but crave a slower pace, Pererenan is the best place to stay in Bali.
How can I get around Pererenan and nearby areas?
The easiest way to explore Pererenan and the Canggu area is by scooter – it’s the most flexible mode of transport in Bali. You can also hire a driver in a car for longer trips (like visiting Tanah Lot Temple or heading up north), or simply hop on the back of a Gojek or Grab ride for short distances.
Are there family-friendly hotels in Pererenan?
Absolutely. Masmara Resort has spacious family suites with tropical vibes and a warm, homely feel.
