The Geylang Serai Ramadan bazaar kicks on 26 May with more than 1000 traditional food and hipster halal eats (more rainbow grub!) as well as film screenings and cultural performances
It’s that time of the year again when Ramadan rolls around, and Muslims prepare for a month of fasting and spiritual cleansing. And for foodies, it’s also an exciting time: Geylang comes alive again with street food stalls dishing out everything from traditional grub to Insta-worthy hipster eats. This, coupled with the colourful lights lining the streets, loud Raya music and huge crowds, always makes for a festive atmosphere.
Happening from 26 May to 24 June, the bazaar will feature all of the usual nuts and bolts (and more). Aside from pasar malam (night market) staples like takoyaki, Ramly burger and keropok lekor (fried fish crackers), expect to see new additions to last’s year fare. Rainbow bagels, step aside for Rainbow Ice Cream buns – these are warm buns stuffed with marshmallow ice cream and topped with cereal – and candy floss burritos. Trust us, it won’t be long before these colourful snacks blow up on your Insta feed. Another (perhaps not so surprising) food fad that’s set to make waves at the bazaar? Poke bowls.
Food aside, there’s plenty to do here – shop festive clothing or enjoy cultural performances and free screenings of P Ramlee films. There’ll also be a mass break fast session on June 17 for both Muslims and non-Muslims, so be sure to lock down a buka (break fast) and bazaar date with the gang ASAP. We’ll be heading down this weekend to check out the bazaar for ourselves, so be sure to watch this space for all our foodie highlights.
The Geylang Serai Bazaar is happening from 26 May to 24 June, at the Malay Village, Engku Aman Road and Tanjong Katong Complex.
