The latest health trend hits Singapore
New trend alert: social dieting. Of course, since it started in the US (by celebrity health coach Jillian Michaels – you know the tough-as-abs coach on The Biggest Loser), its arrival in Singapore was inevitable. And we are jumping on the bandwagon. Yep, come 16 January, our island will see its first social weight loss challenge Fit To Win (FTW) take off!
Rules of the game are simple. Players begin by placing $20 into a general money pot. All registrants get to participate in an eight-week get-fit program that includes free fitness classes (Zumba, Pilates, Kickboxing, Belly Dancing, Muay Thai you name it!). At the end of the challenge, players who lose 5% or more of their starting weight get to split the share of the pot equally.
Additionally, the top three participants who lose the highest percentage of their starting weight will win prizes up to $3000! How awesome is that!
Helmed by four final-year students from Nanyang Technological University, FTW aims to provide a supportive community for like-minded Singaporeans seeking to get fitter and healthier together. As tough as the journey to achieving personal fitness goals may be, they believe that it can also be made fun with friendly competition and rewards.
A similar challenge called the DietBet led by Michaels took off late last year in the United States. Like the organizers of FTW, Michaels also hopes to transform weight loss from something of a chore into a fun communal activity. DietBet and FTW share similar goals to serve as platforms to kickstart a healthier lifestyle for participants that continue long after the campaigns have run.
We like nothing better than a good sweat-out with our friends, which is why we’re loving the social element of this challenge. Count us in for the share of the $2980 (when we last checked on the site, and growing) pie – yup the girls at Honeycombers are ready to bust some festive weight together! This is perhaps the only time we’ll say we’re rooting for a lose-lose situation.
Registration at $25 ($5 registration fee included) now open on FTW’s official website.
Drop an email to contact.ftwsg@gmail.com, or a message at https://www.facebook.com/fittowin.sg for enquiries.
Participants who register and pay by 31st December 2013 will be entitled to 30 class credits instead of the usual 24.
