Shangri-La Lhasa Opens
Inspired by the mythical paradise found in James Hilton’s novel, Lost Horizon, the Shangri-La brand seems to have found its way home in Lhasa. The administrative capital of Tibet, aka roof of the world (since it’s 3,650 metres above sea level), welcomed this luxury hotel into its fold last month.
Located within walking distance to the famed World Heritage sites of Potala Palace and Norbulingka Palace, the 289-room five-star property provides a lavish base camp for those looking to explore this mythical-like paradise on earth. Lhasa is also home to some of the world’s most culturally significant Buddhist sites like the Jokhang Temple and Sera Monastery.
Given the altitude, you should acclimatize before heading out to see the sights. The folks at Shangri-La were considerate enough to build Lhasa’s first oxygen lounge, where guests can also enjoy reflexology treatments while admiring the hotel’s landscaped garden.
We love that the hotel pays almost-total homage to the unique Tibetan culture. For instance, a 6.5 metre bell-like chandelier draped in flowing red fabric (reminiscent of a prayer wheel) is the dramatic centrepiece of the Lodgers Lounge. The rooms feature splashes of reds, deep blue, and vibrant green seen in traditional Tibetan dress. In-room services include sweet tea served in Tibetan pots and hand-woven yak fur pouches as turndown gifts – sweet!
No adventure is complete without trying the local food. Try Shangri-La Lhasa’s signature restaurant, Shambala, which serves up authentic Tibetan cuisine (like Lamb Ribs marinated in Tibetan yoghurt and Baked Bacon wrapped in Tibetan cheese), as well as traditional Yunnan dishes.
