Renaissance fair 101: No, it’s not a cosplay event

The two might overlap in terms of similarity, but Renaissance fairs and cosplay events aren’t the same thing. A Renaissance fair, as stated in the name, is an outdoor festival recreating a historical period, typically the English or European Renaissance. In recent years, fairs have taken on medieval and fantasy elements, which make the event extra whimsical. In terms of vibe, you can relate it to Game of Thrones, Baldur’s Gate, or The Witcher.
Based on Ren Faire Sg’s social media, we can expect the same medieval vibes with Singaporean twists. While not as theatrical or over the top as the Renaissance fairs you see overseas, the event has already garnered great interest from the local live-action role-playing (LARP) community and fantasy lovers.
Activities to look forward to

A full itinerary is set to be released closer to the event date. However, the team behind Ren Faire Sg have already given many hints on what to expect at the event:

- Trinket trading and tarot reading
- Buskers and performances
- Best dressed competition for those who dress up
- Interactive street cast featuring local storytelling team The Seven Seas of Sage and LARP Singapore Community
- Questing through a stamp rally, clue hunts, and loot hunts
How you can participate

Consider volunteering to help the team out! Organisers are on the lookout for performers who can bring whimsy to the event, as well as assistance for guest services, guild quests, and setup and teardown. Keep an eye on the social media pages around mid-December for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the event child- and pet-friendly?
Yes! Both children and pets are welcome at the event. As most of the event is held on the grassy parts of Fort Canning Park, the path may be uneven, so be wary if you decide to bring a stroller.
Children require their own tickets to enter the event. As most activities are meant for those 13 and up, they’ll need to be supervised by an adult. Pets should be leashed at all times. Be responsible and clean up after them.
Must I dress up to attend the event?
Costumes are highly encouraged, but not required! You’re free to attend in comfy modern clothes, and dress up as much or as little as you want.
Organisers also plan on renting portable airconditioning units too, so it won't be too stuffy during the event.
What are the differences between the tickets?
Tickets come in three tiers – Citizen ($11), Baron ($18), and Earl ($27).
The Citizen ticket is considered general entry, giving you access to the fairgrounds, performances and games, souvenirs, and even some quests.
The Baron ticket includes some bonus perks like fast pass entry to the grounds, exclusive merch, and priority sign-ups for competitions and workshops.
The Earl ticket comes with the bonus of a seat at the exclusive Dungeons & Dragons play session!
What happens if it rains?
The event will continue if it rains, so it’s recommended that you prepare umbrellas or ponchos. Ponchos will be available for purchase on-site.
If weather conditions are deemed dangerous and the event needs to be cancelled, tickets will not be refunded.
Are there food and drinks? Can I bring my own food?
Food and drink vendors will be available at the faire. You’re also welcome to bring your own food and a water bottle, as there are water points around the park.
Is the event wheelchair accessible?
Yes, the event is wheelchair-accessible! Do note that Fort Canning has slopes and paved pathways, and most of the event will take place on grass, so some activities may be harder to access.
How do I get to the event location?
By car: There are a few lots available at Fort Canning Park. However, the organisers highly encourage public transport or private hire rides as parking spaces aren’t guaranteed.
By private hire: Drop off at Fort Canning Park
By train: Drop off at Fort Canning Station, Dhoby Ghaut Station, or Clarke Quay Station and walk to Fort Canning Park.
