Nikoi Island Fundraiser Weekend
With sand between our toes and an icy-cold cocktail in the hand, enjoying the cool breeze and silence – we have been privileged enough to spent many a weekend on the private tropical island of Nikoi.
Just 50 miles from Singapore, this eco-luxe resort is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Singapore and has an almost Maldives-feel about it.
Now we have the perfect excuse to return – Nikoi Island is hosting their annual fundraiser for The Island Foundation on 8-10 November 2013.
When you visit Bintan and Nikoi you will notice a distinct change beyond the entrance to the Bintan Resorts zone, where the local population has been left behind by the developments in the tourist zones. The local communities here rely on fishing, and with rising fuel costs, overfishing, and sea travel restrictions, its toll on the local incomes and welfare is unmissable. The Island Foundation works with coastal communities in East Bintan and the Riau Archipelago to help improve their income health and education. This poverty alleviation & eradication is their long-term goal.
The good news? The folks at Nikoi are all set for a weekend of fundraising with some special guests lending a hand to make this a fun-filled fundraising weekend.
Behind the bar you will find Zdenek Kastanek, the award-winning resident bartender at 28 HK Street in Singapore (voted one of the top 50 bars worldwide) making some special cocktails. Chef Penny Williams will be lending some finesse in the kitchen. Chef Penny has worked at the Savoy hotel in London, and 12 years in Sydney in cutting-edge restaurants like Restaurant 41, Boathouse and Bather’s Pavilion, and now runs her own Balinese restaurant and cooking school in Bali, so you can expect a host of local Indonesian and western flavours.
Finally, guest sommelier, Anthony Olliver who has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants such as “L’Azimut” at La Trinite-Sur-Mer (Britanny) and the “Domaine de la Rochevilaine” at Billiers (Britanny) will be on hand to give wine master classes.
As for cost – well it’s up for you to decide. As a guide Nikoi suggests S$2000 for a one bedroom, S$3500 for a two bedroom, and S$5000 for the three bedroom. Everything included (within reason) except ferry tickets to Bintan. All proceeds from the weekend will go directly to the foundation. If you would like to book in, email [email protected].
