Music Streaming Services
Be it hacking away on your keyboard, heading out for a jog, or relishing a leisurely cuppa, these me-time moments are best with the company of good music. Better still when you can conveniently stream your revered tunes online, on your laptop, tablet, or mobile phone, and discover fresh new tracks while you’re at it.
Last.fm
As one of the pioneers in the industry, Last.fm is a music discovery and streaming service which builds detailed profiles of each user’s music taste based on tracks searched and listened to on the website. With an extensive music library, you’re bound to find your desired artist, album, or track you wish to stream. Best part? They provide a comprehensive list of upcoming concerts around the world, including Singapore.

Spotify
Audiophiles, rejoice! Spotify is now free on mobile smart phones and tablets, so get downloading. There’s (more than) a reason why Spotify is one of the most successful music streaming services in the world – they allow users to access millions of songs at their fingertips, ‘follow’ their friends, favourite artists, and albums with just a click, and access a gamut of amazing music-related apps which are integrated into the Spotify desktop client. Nuff said, we’re sold!
Get their free or ad-free premium version (SGD 9.90 a month with 30 day free trial) on their website, iTunes, and Google Play.

Grooveshark
Scroll, drag, and drop – that’s all you need to do to curate your own list of earworms at Grooveshark. Take your pick from a sweep of genres like electropop, indie, post-funk, rock, jazz, rap, and more, to create a playlist of your choice. Feeling lazy? Hop over to their broadcast page and listen to ready-made playlists crafted by fellow music junkies.
Their free remote pro key and enhanced version (SGD 3.51), which allow you to remotely control Grooveshark playing on your PC or laptop from anywhere in the house, are available on Google Play.
Indie Shuffle
Advocating music discovery powered by real people – Indie Shuffle, managed by founder Jason Grishkoff and an international team of music aficionados, features curated tracks like indie rock, hip hop, electronica, and everything in between. Boasting an extremely user-friendly interface, scroll through the main page to view the list of latest recommended tracks, and click to listen without being directed to a new page. This allows for a (much-appreciated) seamless process of music streaming and website navigation. Though we think the best way to explore Indie Shuffle’s treasure trove of rad tunes is to simply leave the music playing, sit back, and let the site do the shuffling.
Their free app is available on iTunes and Google Play.
8tracks
The folks behind 8tracks strongly believe that handcrafted music programming trumps algorithms, so they did the world a huge favour decided to establish a site which allows anyone and everyone, with the passion for music, to create and share mix tapes (of eight tracks or more) on the web. Hunting down tunes for a road trip, rainy day, or wild party? Each playlist on 8tracks is categorised by mood, occasion, or genre, which allows for a fuss-free search for that perfect playlist you’ve been looking for.
Their free app is available on iTunes or Google Play.
