Maldives Brings Back the Death Penalty
Discerning travellers from all around the world flock to the The Maldives for its gorgeous atolls, pristine waters, and sandy white beaches. So when this nirvana on earth decided to overturn a six-decade-old moratorium on capital punishment, the world sat up and the Internet is abuzz.
The Maldivian government on 27 April adopted this new regulation, which makes provision for execution by lethal injection for crimes of premeditated murder or deliberate manslaughter. The real kicker is that children as young as 7 years old can be held criminally responsible for hadd offences like theft, fornication, adultery, consumption of alcohol, and apostasy – this means minors could potentially face the death penalty and execution in the archipelago.
Since re-enactment, 20 people have been sentenced to death and execution facilities at the Maldives’ Maafushi prison are being built.
Following the discussions online, netizens feel like the Maldives is a paradise lost and the regulation should be repealed. Will this new law make you think twice about heading there?
