Here are Israel’s best attractions and tours to sign up for.
Israel travel guide: Where to explore
1. Tel Aviv
This buzzing city is definitely worth stopping by during your time in Israel. Soak up the sun, sand and sea at famous stretches of sand, including hotspots like Geula beach and Gordon beach. Next, fuel up on coffee and shakshuka at charming cafes like Aroma Espresso Bar and Lulu Cafe. Party-goers can bring the house down at vibrant nightlife spots, while art and history buffs can hit up fascinating exhibitions and galleries. We hate to sound cliche, but there’s something for everyone.
2. Masada
Familiar with the tale of King Herod? Yes, he’s the one who called for the massacre of all Jewish baby boys according to the Bible. Come and visit the remains of his winter palace at this Unesco World Heritage Site within Masada National Park. It’s one of the greatest archaeological sites in all of Israel, and sports some amazing views of the Judaean Desert and the Dead Sea.
3. Dead Sea
This body of water is the lowest place on Earth – standing at 430 metres below sea level. It earned its name from its high level of salinity, which prevents any form of plant or animal life from thriving in it. Visitors love it for its mineral-rich mud and water that’s great for treating skin conditions. Once you’ve had a soak, hit up the Lowest Bar in the World for a refreshing margarita or mojito.
4. Mount of Beatitudes
Atop a hill in Northern Israel sits the Mount of Beatitudes – the same location where Jesus is believed to have given his Sermon on the Mount. But you don’t have to be religious to enjoy this beautiful attraction. Come by and appreciate the incredible architecture of the Church of the Beatitudes, and marvel at views of the lake and cliffs from up high. We hear there’s even a path you can take to the shore of the Sea of Galilee.
5. Old City of Jerusalem
The Old City of Jerusalem is an important place of worship for followers of the three major monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. As such, you can imagine that it’s home to a number of pretty significant religious sites such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall. Once you’re done sightseeing, make time to explore the city markets. Here, you’ll find vendors hawking colourful spices, fabrics and wares in winding alleys and side streets.
6. Western Wall
The Western Wall is known to be one of the last remnants of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It’s considered as one of the holiest sites in the capital of Israel. Jewish people from around the world travel to this site yearly, as it’s believed the wall has been blessed by God. Come and place a written prayer or wish within the cracks of the wall – it’s a centuries-old tradition carried out by visitors and locals alike. You can also sign up for a guided tour of the Western Wall tunnels that’ll take you to hidden segments of the wall and other ancient subterranean spaces.
7. City of Tiberias
Located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, the City of Tiberias is known for its multitude of fish restaurants and religious sites. Plenty of tourists come by to visit the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus was said to have walked on water. Thrillseekers can take part in plenty of water sports, and we recommend a visit to the city’s hot springs, which are believed to have medicinal properties.
8. Church of the Holy Sepulchre
This holy site is known as the place where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected – making it a major pilgrimage site for Christians from all around the world. You’ll find plenty of chapels, altars and religious artefacts (including a fragment of the cross where Jesus was crucified) within the church’s elaborate structure. But the main focus is the Edicule that encloses the tomb of Jesus.
9. Bethlehem
This town sits in Palestine outside the Israeli border, but it’s a must-visit if you’re in the area. It’s known as the birthplace of Jesus Christ (cue O Little Town of Bethlehem on the radio, please). Book a day tour from Jerusalem down to Bethlehem to visit religious sites like the Church of the Nativity, Mar Saba Monastery and Shepherd’s Field.
10. Haifa
Haifa is the third-largest city in Israel and sits facing the Mediterranean Sea (so you know you’re in for some good views). Hit up well-curated museums, visit the beautiful Bah’ai Gardens, or explore restored templar-era buildings at Haifa’s German Colony. You might even want to time your trip to coincide with the annual International Film Festival, Haifa’s biggest cultural event that runs for a week every September.
