I lived my best five-star life at the Grand Lisboa Palace in Macau with dreamy spa sessions, Rosenthal x Versace tableware, and six-course dinners.
I’ve been reviewing hotels for over 16 years, and let me tell you, few places deliver opulence quite like the Grand Lisboa Palace Macau. Imagine an enchanting escape where a whimsical garden evokes the charm of a European chateau, featuring exquisite fine dining at its heart, alongside revitalising spa treatments. If you’re after a taste of European grandeur without the 12-hour flight, this lavish palace ticks all the boxes. After this trip, I’ve decided opulence suits me…
Not enough time? Here are my staycation highlights:
- Jardim Secreto: this elegant European-style garden feels like a secret escape from the city. P.S. The Adventures of Alice has returned this summer with a new season of residency show!
- Incredible dining experiences: savour the elegance of Italian fine dining at Don Alfonso 1890 and modern Portuguese creations at Mesa by José Avillez.
- The Spa at Grand Lisboa Palace: a tranquil haven offering a healing sound therapy that transported me to a zen-like state.
Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau review: An impeccable, five-star stay

On arrival, I was greeted with a vast expanse of pristine white marble flooring, white marble pillars, and massive custom artwork and ceramics. It’s like checking into a palace! My stay at the Grand Deluxe Room was fantastic, with lavish furnishings, a plush bed, and elegant decor.

Oh, and I got a peek at the breathtaking Junior Suite, which wowed me with its grandeur. It has everything you’ll need to make your stay impeccably lush and comfortable. Plus, I adored those beautiful views of the Jardim Secreto, which give ‘Palace of Versailles’ vibes.

Waking up bright and early, I started my mornings with a leisurely stroll through the Jardim Secreto, admiring manicured greens, beautifully landscaped patios, and charming gazebos. What a picturesque setting! I loved how it was the perfect backdrop for photographs.

You might even encounter whimsical rabbits and card soldiers in the Jardim Secreto, because The Adventures of Alice has returned this summer with a new season of residency show. A total must-see, it features Alice and other characters on an enchanting ballet journey, elevated by stunning costumes and cool stage effects. It’ll add a touch of magic to your experience.
Spectacular dining experiences

Looking to explore beyond the resort? Head to Grand Lisboa Macau for an unforgettable lunch at The Eight, a two Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, accessible via the hotel’s shuttle bus service. I loved how The Eight is the Chinese symbolism cleverly woven into its interior design, from the number ‘8’ (a symbol of good fortune) to the swimming goldfish (a symbol of health and vitality).

If you’re seeking a delightful exploration of Portuguese flavours, I highly recommend Mesa by José Avillez. Featuring contemporary Portuguese cuisine with modern techniques, the menu was truly unforgettable. I’m still dreaming of the tuna tartare cone and seafood rice with caviar! Dessert was equally show-stopping. One of the Three Little Pigs was a savoury-sweet delight, and the Mandarin Illusion was a gelato-filled dome.

On my last evening, I indulged in an exceptional fine dining experience at Don Alfonso 1890, which highlighted the authentic flavours of Southern Italy. The stunning interior? Captivating. With bespoke furniture and exquisite Rosenthal x Versace tableware, the restaurant had an atmosphere of sophistication, which I loved. My favourite standout from the five-course degustation was the smoked yellowtail, and I’d suggest you save space for the delightful cheese trolley.
Unwinding in style

Stepping into The Spa at Grand Lisboa Palace, a Forbes Five-Star sanctuary, was wonderful. I adored the sound healing experience, which eased my stress and rejuvenated me. My therapist’s skilled hands worked like magic, melting the tension in my body and giving me a sense of pure tranquillity.
With facilities like a crystal steam room, Finnish sauna, vitality pools, and a beautiful lounge area, it’s truly a haven for anyone who wants to escape the pressures of daily life. I could’ve spent hours in this beautiful space!
Culture, vibes and local life

Curious to explore Macau? It’s a gorgeous city of captivating contrasts. I ventured out of the hotel to wander the cobblestoned streets, starting at Senado Square to immerse myself in its vibrant energy, then ascending the steps to the iconic Ruins of St Paul’s. Don’t miss out on this slice of East meets West history!
My tips for a staycation in Macau:
- Book your hotel directly through the official website, as it often includes perks like complimentary breakfast, spa packages, or late check-out.
- Schedule spa appointments in advance, as treatments like sound healing therapy are popular.
- For the best lighting and fewer crowds, head to the Jardim Secreto at 8.30am when it opens.
- There’s limited public transport around the Cotai Strip. Use the resort’s complimentary shuttle bus service or apps like Macau Taxi for easy navigation.
- Check for dining dress codes: fine-dining venues require smart casual attire – no flip-flops or sleeveless tops for gentlemen.
Staying at the Grand Lisboa Palace Macau was a combination of glamour, culture, and five-star indulgence – where East meets West in an unforgettable way – and I loved every bit of it.
