Discover the remarkable life and artistic legacy of He Xiangning (1878-1972), one of the pioneering women of modern Chinese ink art.
Opening on 1 April 2026, He Xiangning: Ink and Intent marks Southeast Asia’s first retrospective and the Gallery’s first solo exhibition dedicated to the artist. Featuring over 50 artworks, the exhibition traces seven decades of her artistic journey – from early experiments in ink to powerful works shaped by the political and social transformations of her time.
Co-curated by National Gallery Singapore and He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, the exhibition revisits He’s groundbreaking contributions as a female artist and situates her work within the broader cultural and regional context of modern Chinese art.
Presented in English and Chinese, Ink and Intent builds on National Gallery Singapore’s ongoing research into modern ink practices and invites audiences to reflect on the enduring influence of a trailblazer, visionary, and advocate whose work continues to resonate across generations.
