Rare Events
14 Mar
NUS Museum
50 Kent Ridge Crescent, 119279
What are rare events? Why do they seem to occur so frequently? Join Emeritus Professor Louis Chen (Department of Mathematics, Department of Statistics and Applied Probability, NUS) in this talk, where he will give examples of rare events associated with catastrophes, lotteries, coincidences, and questions about the existence of extraterrestrial life. He will show that the paradoxically frequent occurrence of rare events can be explained by using the “law of small numbers”. Rare events also occur in the number system. For example, one can find Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in the number system. He will relate the decimal expansion of the number π (pi) to coin tossing and use it to explain the occurrences of rare events in the number system.

Jef Geys: Quadra Medicinale Singapore
01 Dec
-
03 Mar
The Exhibition Hall
NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, Block 43 Malan Road, Gillman Barracks, Singapore 109443
NTU CCA Singapore is privileged to be presenting Quadra Medicinale by the late Belgian artist Jef Geys (1934–2018), shown for the first time in Asia. Initially commissioned for the Belgian Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 2009, the project surprised the art world with its organic subject matter and its collaborative process. Quadra Medicinale adopted the interdisciplinary research and knowledge-forming methodologies core to Geys’s practice. Here, a geographical quadrant of a presumably organised, carefully planned urban territory is marked out and from within this “terroir,” attention is thrown on the accidental, often-overlooked street plants, or “weeds.” Through uncovering the productive properties of these seemingly useless and parasitical plants, with the aim of creating a manual for the homeless, the project juxtaposed objective, scientific systems of classification with the socially practical forms of knowledge sharing and archiving. Structured as a universal manual, the method employed in the project can be replicated anywhere. Quadra Medicinale Singapore includes a newly-produced Singapore section where local collaborators will be invited to identify and archive 12 street plants from a quadrant of their neighbourhood. Since the late 1950s, Geys produced works that focused on the construction of cultural, social, and political engagement beginning with the idea of “terroir,” which he considered “a place where everything is able to take place or, perhaps better, has taken place, something broader than ‘biotope:’ bio, nature, greenery and everything thereabout, everything that floats in the air and everything that sucks [. . .]” Questioning mainstream, rational, organised systems of planning, information, and experience, Geys casted doubt on the fundamentals of images, language, as well as interrogated art’s system of meaning-making and the relation between sense, form, and function. Quadra Medicinale Singapore is guest curated by Dirk Snauwaert, Curator of Jef Geys’s Quadra Medicinale at the Belgian Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2009 and Artistic Director at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels, in collaboration with Ute Meta Bauer, Founding Director, NTU CCA Singapore and Professor, School of Art, Design, and Media, NTU and Khim Ong, Deputy Director, Curatorial Programmes, NTU CCA Singapore. Snauwaert was NTU CCA Singapore’s Curator-in-Residence in 2015.

Sir Stamford Raffles was a British official with the East India Company and was stationed in Southeast Asia between 1805 and 1824. He is known for establishing modern Singapore as a British port, as the author of The History of Java, and as a collector of natural history and cultural materials. Opinions of Raffles have changed over time. He has been viewed as a scholarly expert on the region, a progressive reformer, a committed imperialist, and even a plagiariser. In keeping with the Asian Civilisations Museum’s mission to explore encounters and connections, this exhibition presents a complex, multi-layered picture of Raffles while showcasing the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Java and the Malay world. The presentation of this exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore. For more information, please visit http://acm.org.sg/.

Through the skillful use of swift lines to enhance existing architecture, Khoo uses an interplay of light, shadows, and reflections to create multi-faceted layers and dimensions. The art pieces epitomise Khoo’s willingness to distance himself from the conventional in order to achieve renewed artistic interpretation, as well as his courage to dive into the unknown for the sake of reinvention. His works also straddle between realism and abstraction, inviting viewers to see how the two meld together in new and unconventional ways.

COMO Uma Bhutan
Bhutan
Sister hotels COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha have partnered with Natural World Safaris and British-American photographer and Kodak Ambassador Michael Turek to launch Bhutan’s first Film and Photography Expedition from 2nd to 9th June 2019. The ‘Eight-Day Film & Photography Expedition\' itinerary will give guests the opportunity to experience the beauty of Bhutan and to slow down and engage in the present moment through the lens of a film camera with the guidance of Michael Turek. Michael will be sharing his methods of shooting on film — a medium that encourages photographers to be present in the moment, and to capture their surroundings with deliberation and intention. By slowing down with film, participants will enjoy a deeper and more thoughtful observation of nature and discover a deeper level of engagement with the Bhutanese people. The result being more intimate visual illustrations of their experience in this unique country. Guests will spend five nights at COMO Uma Paro and two nights at COMO Uma Punakha and will get to journey deep into the kingdom’s heartland to explore three distinctly different but important valleys: the bustling capital of Thimphu with its monuments, museums and markets; the tropical Punakha Valley with its magnificent dzongs; and the emerald valley of Paro, with its rice paddies and ancient temples. Other highlights include walks along winding rivers to sacred monasteries and temples that cling to sheer cliffs faces as well as spectacular drives through mountain passes. The magic light of Bhutan will come alive on treks along forest trails lined with fluttering prayer flags. The ‘Eight Day Film & Photography Expedition’ runs from 2nd June to 9th June 2019 and starts from USD 7,600 per person for single accommodation or USDUSD 5,800 per person for twin share accommodation.

Breaking free from standard time-signatures, Math Rock came into its own with asymmetrical time signatures of 7/8, 11/8 and 13/8. The result? — Pure aural intoxication. Chaotic, melodic, but always stimulating to the senses, the unique genre redefines the angular relationship between time and space in ultra-creative sounds. It is truly the sound of this zeitgeist. Heading the line-up is LITE (Japan), hailed as “one of Japan’s top instrumental rock acts”. Founded in 2003, LITE has successfully toured the US, UK and Asia with their brand of sonic artistry that combines the precision and musicianship of Prog-Rock with the emotionally charged cinematic compositions of art rock, in a heavier, more modern package that they describe as math rock. The line-up features home-grown Singapore band Forests, with their heady blend of math rock, pop (and even emo) and grab a chance to catch our very own NUS bands in rock heaven.
