Sartorial Ideas for Weekend Mischief
The humble maxi dress is incredibly versatile… and tricky to wear. But fear not wardrobe warriors, our ten golden rules will have you maximizing your power dress in no time.
1. Petite girls – it is possible to wear a maxi dress without letting it wear you. Use prints to your advantage by opting for something that elongates your figure. Stripes are a failsafe bet; horizontal stripes at the top will broaden your shoulders, diagonal stripes help create an hourglass silhouette, and vertical stripes will make those legs look model-worthy. For an added boho boost, add a pair for chunky platforms.
2. Tall girls – the good news: you don’t have to worry about tripping over your skirt. Opt for open-toe sandals rather than ballet flats to really work that beachside glam look. Use a belt to accentuate your waist (i.e. the narrowest part of your body).
3. Bottom-heavy girls – the maxi is your best friend! Look for dresses with shoulder-baring tops and an empire waist to draw attention away from your bottom.
4. Wearing heels with your maxi dress – the secret is mathematical. The hem of the dress should be no more than half an inch above ground.
5. A neutral maxi isn’t boring – it only gives you layers to work with. Throw a denim vest or jacket over, use jewellery to change your look, or even play with your lipstick colour.
6. Yes you can wear your maxi to work – just dress it appropriately. Layer a cardigan or blazer on top and dial down the jewellery to something sleeker. Keep the skyscraper heels for Pangaea and slip on kitten heels instead. A strappy heeled sandal will do the trick too.
7. Don’t want to make like a bride and hike up your skirt all day? Sartorial lasses will know the trick is to knot the bottom of the skirt.
8. Bust out the denim! A denim shirt will instantly glam down your maxi dress, and works great with both printed and solid-coloured maxis.
9. Covert your dress into a skirt – just layer a simple tank or tunic over the top. This works best with strapless maxis.
10. A little leather never hurt anyone. Toughen up a particularly girl dress (adorned with lace, frills etc.) with a cropped biker leather jacket. Voila – the French girls have nothing on you.
