Experience the Bold Flavours of Thailand in the Heart of Kowloon City
Following my latest visit to La Volta, let’s change things up with a new restaurant opening that impresses with fresh, fiery Thai flavours. There’s something enchanting about the bold, spicy flavours that dance on the palate and mirrors the energy of a lively market filled with the heart and soul of Thailand. Each dish is a celebration of tradition and personal stories, inviting diners to experience the depth of Thai gastronomy in a warm and welcoming setting.
The place I’m describing is Thonglor, which left a lasting impression on my recent visit with homey and complex dishes lovingly prepared by Chef Henry Pattanin Leung.
The Restaurant

As you step through its doors, you’re instantly welcomed by the lively chatter and the sizzle of the grill that set the stage for an unforgettable meal. The walls, adorned with charming vintage Thai movie posters, create an inviting atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and energetic.
The Concept

Thonglor is a heartfelt homage to the bold, unapologetic flavours that define Thai cuisine. Under the passionate guidance of Chef Henry Pattanin Leung, each plate is a love letter to the food of his homeland, crafted with a deep respect for tradition while delivering an experience that feels refreshing and personal.
The Food

The menu at Thonglor is a celebration of Thai classics, each dish bursting with character and complexity. Kicking things off on a punchy note is the Tom Yum Soup Noodles with Minced Pork – a vibrant concoction bursting with zesty lime and aromatic herbs that warms up the appetite. To follow, the Chicken Satay Skewers are grilled to perfection with a rich, tangy flavour.

Another highlight is the refreshing Chicken Lettuce Wraps, which contrast beautifully with the rich savouriness of the Deep Fried Pork Belly with Fish Sauce.

A dish I’ll definitely be coming back for is the Grilled Wagyu Beef served with a Northern Thai-style chilli chutney. Every bite is tender and soft, with a slightly spicy and tangy chutney that balances well with the richness of the marbled meat. This dish exemplifies how every dish at Thonglor feels familiar yet tastes elevated.

The Stir-Fried Spicy Wagyu Beef with Holy Basil Rice, topped with two sunny-side-up eggs, is another standout—a fiery dish that perfectly balances heat and comfort in every bite. While munching on the delicious food, I spied the Oyster Omelette on a neighbouring table, which I will definitely be returning to try next time.

To wash it all down, I opted for a refreshing Thai Tea and a luscious Mango Smoothie, both paired beautifully with every plate of the meal.

And, for dessert, I couldn’t resist the classic Mango Sticky Rice – light, sweet and creamy, served alongside the Homemade Pandan ice cream with lotus biscuit and jelly as a nod to a nostalgic banana boat. A third dessert option, brimming with the herbaceous flavours of lemongrass, will also be the reason I come back for another meal!
Exceptional Hospitality
One standout aspect of Thonglor is its commitment to hospitality. Unlike many other Thai restaurants, where you might feel rushed to leave, you’ll be encouraged to sit back and fully enjoy your meal when you dine here. Both founders are veterans of Hong Kong’s hospitality world who understand the importance of attentive service and warm ambiance to go with a delicious meal.
A chat with Chef Leung
During my visit, I had a wonderful conversation with Chef Henry, who shared exciting details about their upcoming expansion next door. He showed me the new space, which will feature a larger kitchen that promises an extended menu. It’s clear that Thonglor is committed to evolving while staying true to its roots, and I can’t wait to return for another round of their delicious offerings.
In a city where dining experiences often veer towards the fusion and experimental, Thonglor stands firm in its authenticity. It invites you to savour the true essence of Thai cuisine, making it a destination for anyone craving for the flavours of Bangkok.
I highly recommend a visit after a concert or a show at Kai Tak Stadium—it’s well worth the walk and a great way to avoid the crowds rushing home!
