If you're looking for a luxurious getaway destination close to Hong Kong, then The Balé, Phnom Penh is where you will want to head.
One of the best things about living in Hong Kong is its close proximity to wonderful travel destinations. When you’re not checking in for a staycation in Hong Kong, it’s easy to enjoy a weekend in Singapore or head north to visit wonderful resorts in China. Just a two hour flight from Hong Kong – and with the fastest immigration queues ever – Phnom Penh is a must-visit destination, and for those looking for the ultimate luxury accommodation, you need to spend time at The Balé, Phnom Penh.
A visit to The Balé, Phnom Penh
I was so in need of a holiday when I went to stay at The Balé, Phnom Penh. Let’s just say that brain function was in decline and it was time for a digital detox.
About a thirty minute drive from Phnom Penh airport, the resort sits on the Mekong River, completely secluded from the capital city. Featuring just 18 rooms, the property is all about quality service and luxurious living, with a large swimming pool that allows you to watch the boats going up and down the river and a spa that gives a wonderful traditional Khmer massage with a hot compress. Ahhh… the serenity.
The accommodation
At The Balé, Phnom Penh, the Courtyard Suites are spacious, with a huge bath and shower area that looks out onto your own personal courtyard. Luxury to me is sitting in a bath and reading as colourful birds and insects fly around outside the window, and this is an everyday occurance at the resort. Beds are super comfortable, and we love the little poems that are left for guests after turndown each night.
The four Riverfront Suites take it up a level, offering a wooden deck and a personal refreshment pool – it’s the ultimate in secluded luxury.
The food situation
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at Theato restaurant, a haven of good design, where Scandinavian minimalism meets Cambodian heritage and art. While the menu is highly curated, there’s something for everyone when it comes to breakfast, from avocado toast to Japanese somen noodles.
An array of delightful salads, locally caught seafood and other Cambodian specialities are on offer throughout the day, with the Mekong river lobster, grouper fillet and amok sauce winning the popular vote during our visit.
You can also opt to enjoy your meal al fresco, as you sit next to the river and watch the world go by – so romantic!
The service
What can I say? The team at The Balé, Phnom Penh will go out of their way to look after you, with someone available to assist you 24-hours a day. They can arrange tours to suit your needs, and as they are staffed mostly by locals, they always have great recommendations for dining or activities in the city.
The Balé, Phnom Penh has to be on your hit list if you need a break from Hong Kong. It blends great design, phenomenal service and wonderful cuisine effortlessly; what more could you ask for in a break?
