1. Anpu
Anpu, previously known as Deserts Chang, is an indie singer-songwriter who has performed at Hong Kong’s biggest outdoor music festival Clockenflap. She was a child prodigy who wrote over a hundred songs and landed a record deal by the age of nineteen. With her folky guitar and enchanting voice, she is ideal for an afternoon of reflection. She’s definitely one of our favourite Taiwanese female musicians of all-time.
2. Teresa Teng
In her lifetime, Teresa Teng charmed her audience from around the world. Even after her untimely death in 1995, her sweet and melodic hits like The Moon Represents My Heart still capture the heart of many (ours included) and will remain classic for those who grew up in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.
3. Zooey Wonder
A newcomer to the scene, Zooey Wonder released her debut album Wonderland in 2017. Combining elements of ambient and electric sounds, her music is sensual and moving. Be on the lookout for this emerging star, as you’ll definitely catch her name on the radio in the coming years.
4. A-Mei
When it comes to Taiwanese female musicians, A-Mei’s modern and romantic ballads have made her fans swoon for the last two decades. She is an entertainer with a social conscience, and as a member of Puyuma, a Taiwanese indigenous group, she uses her popularity to draw attention to aboriginal issues in Taiwan. She is also an avid supporter of the LGBTQ community. What is there not to love about A-Mei?
5. 9M88
A designer-turned-musician, 9M88 found her calling during her fashion internship in New York City. Known for her genre-bending collaborations with other Taiwanese musicians such as Leo and ØZI, her jazzy R&B-inspired tunes are retro and perfect for chilling out.
