Behind the brand’s success are Jimit and Niyati, a husband-and-wife duo who started Niya K in 2015. While Niyati is the designer and creator of your bespoke jewellery, Jimit is the diamond specialist and in charge of sourcing the best gems from his global network of manufacturers. How did their brand come to be and what makes it so special? Find out in our chat with Niyati below.
The story of Niya K, the premium destination for diamonds in Hong Kong
What is your backstory and why did you two decide to launch your business together?
Starting our own business together was never on the cards! I studied art and fashion and worked in the fashion industry while Jimit, a second-generation diamantaire, worked for a leading diamond manufacturer. After we had kids, I took some time off and, with Jimit’s support, started designing and creating jewellery pieces for our close friends. Things quickly snowballed from there and we realised our compatibility extended beyond our marriage. Of course, we received some advice (and warnings!) about keeping our marriage sane while working together, but I’m glad to say: so far so good!
What makes Niya K stand out from the other jewellers in Hong Kong?
To stand out in a competitive environment, we need to check all the boxes, including the price, quality, design, service, transparency, experience – the list goes on! Jimit and I believe we can achieve this, as we have different skill sets that complement each other, along with a great team to back us up. We’re also passionate about our business and take pride in personally attending to each customer, from the first contact to the unveiling of the piece. We seek to build lasting relationships with them.
What do you love most about running your own business?
It’s difficult to choose just one thing I love most… I’d never thought I’d become an entrepreneur and get to enjoy all the benefits it brings. But if I really have to choose one aspect, it’s the freedom of working anytime, anywhere, and as much as I want! Of course, there’s a lot of responsibility and pressure that comes with being my own boss, but I genuinely love what I do. I truly believe I have the best job in the world! I love seeing people walking into my office happy, and leaving happy with the jewellery of their dreams.
