Taki Chan founded her studio Yoga GOM to help people become more familiar with themselves through yoga.
We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a comprehensive digital networking platform (with IRL benefits, too) that encourages connection, business support and community. It is a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented and inspiring folks, so we’ve decided to share the love by interviewing some of the lovely Launchpad members. Looking for inspiration? Check out how Taki Chan, co-founder of Yoga GOM, gets it done like a boss.
How I get it done: Taki Chan
How and why did you decide to launch your business?
I am a psychology teacher and I am fascinated by how the human mind works. However, psychology theories cannot often solve practical problems. Yoga, in my view, is a school of “applied psychology,” providing ways to enhance mental and physical health with clear steps and instruction that people can practice daily. I find it logical and useful. So my partner and I founded Yoga GOM to share our knowledge of yoga with others. We are also intentionally building a community that helps people become more self-aware.
What is your elevator pitch?
The master of Tibetan Buddhism Mingyur Rinpoche once mentioned that GOM literally means “getting familiar.” At Yoga GOM, we aim to cultivate emotional, mental, and physical awareness through the practice of yoga asana, pranayama, and mindfulness. We are helping people become more familiar with themselves through the practise of yoga.
What does the Launchpad community mean to you?
Joining the Launchpad community has helped me build connections with other entrepreneurs. I think entrepreneurship can be quite a lonely experience when you start out. As you have your own vision and project, there may not be many examples out there to take reference from. A community is an important source of emotional support, insight, connections, and networking.
How I get it done: Lightning round
On a typical morning: I normally go to Yoga GOM and enjoy the morning sunshine coming in from the windows. Small routines—like cleaning the space, watering the plants, and burning palo santo—help me to set the space with nice vibe and helps me feel more settled for the day.
On keeping stress levels low: I schedule a “do-nothing-day” every few weeks or so to make sure I have enough alone time to reset. Also, I use an app to remind myself to watch three breaths every 15 minutes. That is very effective in settling my mind.
On the advice you’d give your younger self: Work less and travel more. Don’t worry too much about saving money. Just go and see the world as much as possible. You will have everything you need along the way.
