It gets suffocating under the mask and makeup products can melt terribly. Here are 5 makeup tips for face masks to avoid that awkward moment when you remove it
You know we are big into beauty products and vegan skincare here at Honeycombers, and this summer is like no other! Now that we’re all wearing masks wherever we go, our makeup can sometimes look the worse for wear. But all your work need not be lost. Here are 5 makeup tips for face masks, so that you’ll still look on point at your meeting, soiree, or play date.
1. Look flawless with minimal products
First off, we want you to know that you look fabulous, and it’s one hundred per cent okay for you to go makeup free (as many of us at Honeycombers do on the regular.) That being said, there are times when you want to kill it in the boardroom or dazzle on a first date, and we’re here for you looking and feeling your absolute best. Minimal products could be just what your need to fix any areas you’re unhappy with without weighing your skin down with too much product.
A lot of us are stuck in this dilemma — we want to avoid that cakey look, but we also want to perfectly conceal the dark circles. Try using colour correctors. Remember the colour wheel that we learnt in elementary school? It’s basically the same theory: we use complementary colours to neutralise the tone of our flaws, making them less visible. For instance, green correctors reduce redness, lavender correctors brighten up yellow skin, and peach or orange correctors cancel dark circles.
Colour correctors help even out our skin with minimal products, especially when the flaws are so evident that they cannot be covered with beige concealers. It might be hard to grasp the technique at first, but practice makes perfect for sure! The All-in-One Color Correcting Palette from Stila ($350HKD) has detailed instructions at the back that you can refer to. Bonus: this palette includes finishing powder that helps save some space in your bag.
2. Set your foundation
We can’t stress enough the importance of finishing powder, the easiest way to set your makeup. Simply apply a layer of finishing powder on top of the foundation and sweep away the excess powder after 3-5 minutes (depending on your skin condition). This step helps to “lock” the makeup on your face by absorbing the extra grease.
Another tool that comes in handy here is setting spray. Try the sandwich method: put on setting spray and finishing powder as the base, and repeat the same process after applying foundation. This method may sound tedious, but trust me, it absolutely works. The Ultra HD Pressed Powder from Make Up For Ever ($310HKD) goes well with the All Nighter Long-lasting Makeup Setting Spray from Urban Decay ($280HKD).

A shiny nose draws unnecessary attention when we talk to people. Consider putting on mattifier (or some call it shine control primer) before your foundation. This type of product contains materials that reduce oil secretion as well as pore visibility. Not only can it smoothen your skin, but also make your makeup stay longer. The POREfessional Face Primer from Benefit Cosmetics ($120HKD) is our all-time favourite that you should absolutely check out.
4. Quick and convenient sun protection
Putting on sunscreen is time-consuming, yet we can’t omit this step for the sake of our skin health (check our full story on sunscreen for the Hong Kong humidity). Save some time by using a moisturiser with SPF, such as the Everyday Sunscreen from Supergoop ($305HKD). The CC+ Cream from IT Cosmetics ($320HKD) is another great option. If its low coverage does not bother you, feel free to ditch the concealers to save more time.
5. Smudge-free eye makeup
A lot of products claim to be smudge-free, but they can’t beat the humid summer in Hong Kong. Eyeshadows and eyeliners fuse with the grease on our eyelids, forming dark patches like panda eyes. Consider using the Eyeshadow Primer Potion from Urban Decay ($230HKD). Its benefits include keeping the eye makeup on all day, bringing out a more vibrant look, and enabling smoother application of eyeshadows. Don’t forget to brush on some finishing powder and you’ll be good to go.
With all these makeup tips for face masks, your masterpiece should be able to stay on your face all day. Make sure you try out these ideas and share them with your friends!
