Planning a trip to Kuta Lombok? Here’s where to stay, eat, surf and explore in 2026.
So, you’ve ticked off all of Bali’s best beaches, and now you’re looking for a new island adventure? We have just the spot. Enter: Lombok. This Indonesian island is just a 20-minute flight from Bali, blessed with white sand beaches, turquoise bays and rugged hillsides. It’s a jaw-dropping island paradise that still feels like a secret. And our favourite town on the island? Kuta Lombok.
Not to be confused with its louder, more chaotic namesake in Bali, Kuta on Lombok island is something else entirely: laid-back, surfy and packed with cool cafes, stunning boutique hotels, and world-class waves . Here’s everything you need to know.
📌 Quick note: Kuta Lombok and Kuta Bali are completely different places. Kuta Lombok is a chilled, surf-focused beach town on the south coast of Lombok Island. Kuta in Bali is a busy tourist area close to Bali airport. This guide is all about Kuta Lombok, NOT Kuta in Bali.
Kuta Lombok: Quick facts
Location: Southern coast of Lombok Island, Indonesia.
Nearest airport: Lombok International Airport (LOP) – 30 minutes from the centre of Kuta Lombok.
Best time to visit: May to September (dry season) for non-surfers, or October to April (wet season) for the best waves and surf conditions.
How to get there: 20-min flight from Bali, or fast boat + 2-hour drive.
How long to stay: 3 to 5 days minimum.
Best for: Surfers, couples, and anyone who loved Bali 15 years ago.
Currency: Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
Getting around: Scooter (most popular), hired driver, or Grab.
Where is Kuta Lombok?
Tucked away on the southern coast of Lombok Island, Kuta is a surfy town known for its raw natural beauty, untouched beaches, and laid-back charm. It’s often called “Bali before the crowds”, and the difference in traffic is immediately noticeable. Think wide, palm-fringed roads that wind through dramatic hills and past hidden bays. Just driving along the coastline is a treat. The surrounding area includes a handful of distinct spots worth knowing too, namely:
– Gerupuk – a fishing village to the east of Kuta Lombok town centre, with world-class waves.
– Selong Belanak – a sweeping white-sand bay about 25 minutes west.
– Serangan – a quieter coastal stretch with some of the region’s best boutique resorts.
Together, they make up what most people loosely refer to as the “Kuta Lombok area”.
How to get to Kuta Lombok
- By plane: The easiest way is to fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP). Direct flights run from Bali (roughly 20 minutes), Jakarta, and several major Southeast Asian hubs every single day. From the airport, it’s about a 30-minute drive to Kuta on a nice wide road (no traffic!) for around IDR 200,000. I recommend arranging a driver in advance to avoid the hustle at Arrivals.
- By boat from Bali: You can take a fast boat from Padang bai in Bali to Lombok’s west coast (Bangsal or Senggigi), then hire a car or scooter for a scenic two-hour drive south to Kuta. It’s a longer journey (approx. 3–4 hours), and if there are big waves and a lot of wind, the boat ride over can be rough!
- Getting around Kuta Lombok: A scooter is the best way to explore. Most guesthouses and hotels can arrange a rental, and you can expect to pay around IDR 70,000–100,000 per day. If you’d rather not ride, hire a local driver for the day (around IDR 350,000–500,000 depending on how far you go). Grab is now also available in Kuta, though coverage and availability can be patchy in the more remote spots.
How long should you stay in Kuta Lombok?
Aim for at least 3 to 5 days to really soak up the area. That gives you time to explore the beaches, get a surf lesson or two, eat your way through the best cafes, and do at least one scenic scooter ride along the coast. Honest warning: most people wish they’d booked longer. Once you settle in, Kuta Lombok has a way of making you stay (I stayed for 2 weeks, when I’d only planned 5 days!).
Where to stay in Kuta Lombok: An area guide
Kuta Lombok is more than just one strip – the area is made up of several distinct pockets, each with a different feel. Choosing the right base makes a big difference to your trip. Here’s a breakdown.
Kuta Town Centre
The heart of Kuta Lombok revolves around the main intersection – a buzzy crossroads lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and surf shops. If you want to roll out of bed and have a flat white in hand within five minutes, this is your spot. Kuta Beach and the new Mandalika area are right on the doorstep, and you’re within easy reach of everything without needing a scooter for every errand. It’s the most convenient base, especially for shorter stays.
Best for: walking everywhere, first-time visitors, great food and nightlife.
Prabu Hill
About five minutes from the centre, the hillside neighbourhood above Kuta offers something the town itself can’t: sweeping views across the bay. Several of the most gorgeous boutique stays and villas sit up here, and waking up to that panorama every morning is hard to beat. You’re still close to everything, and you have easy access to quieter spots like Are Guling beach.
Best for: couples, sunset views, anyone who doesn’t mind a short scooter ride into town.
Gerupuk
Gerupuk is a small fishing village about 10 minutes out of Kuta, and it’s the launch point for the famous Gerupuk Bay surf breaks – some of the best waves in Lombok, accessed by local boat. It’s raw, unpretentious and still very local in feel. The village itself is dusty and functional rather than pretty, and the beach here isn’t one for sunbathing. But if surfing is your entire reason for being in Lombok, there’s a strong argument for staying here. A handful of surf camps and guesthouses have set up nearby in recent years, plus a few simple cafes for post-surf refuelling.
Best for: serious surfers, surf camps, and those who want a more local experience.
Selong Belanak
Around 20 minutes west of Kuta town, Selong Belanak is one of the most beautiful bays in Indonesia – a long, crescent-shaped stretch of white sand backed by green hills, with calm, swimmable water and barely any development. It feels like its own self-contained world. If your version of a perfect holiday involves morning walks along the beach, afternoon swims and sundowners with your feet in the sand, this is where you want to be. More family-friendly than the town, and a world away from any of the surf camp jostle.
Best for: families, couples and beach lovers who want an on-the-sand stay.
Serangan
Further up the coast from Selong Belanak, Serangan is where you go to escape entirely. It’s home to some of the fanciest resorts in the region, with infinity pools, a gorgeous beach, boutique beach clubs, and untouched scenery. Despite the sense of seclusion, you’re only around 25 minutes from Kuta town when you do want a change of scene. The beach here is beautiful and the surf break is world-class. If budget isn’t the top priority and peace and beauty are, stay in Serangan.
Best for: a secluded retreat for those wanting somewhere to truly switch off.
The best hotels & resorts in Kuta Lombok
From budget-friendly hotels to boutique hillside resorts with sweeping bay views, Kuta Lombok has accommodation options for every type of traveller. Here are our top picks:
1. Sempiak Seaside Resort
Boutique beachfront and hillside resort in Lombok with villas, bay views and authentic local experiences.

It’s not often that a resort is both luxurious and steeped in nature, but Sempiak Seaside Resort breaks that mould. It was the first luxury hotel to open in Selong Belanak – the sprawling white-sand bay just 25 minutes from Kuta – and yet, it feels more like a refined boutique stay than a resort. Deeply rooted in the local community, you encounter Lombok’s crafts, cuisine and culture at every turn.
There are just 18 Scenic Villas and Holiday Houses, each individually designed. The Scenic Villas sit high in the hillside with sweeping views over the bay — waking up to waves and birdsong is something else. Direct beach access to Selong Belanak’s powdery sands, an onsite spa, and a private beach club next to the beachfront restaurant Laut Biru round it all out. Most guests here return year after year, and the all-local team (many of whom remember your name) is a big part of why.
Best for: Families and couples who want a genuine Lombok experience.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 1,666,667
Address: Jl Datuk Lopan, Selong Belanak, Lombok
2. Somewhere Lombok
Clifftop luxury villas with an infinity pool, ocean views and stylish designs.

There are hotels with great views, and then there’s Somewhere Lombok – perched on the clifftop above Are Guling Bay with an infinity pool that dissolves straight into the ocean. Arriving here almost stops you in your tracks.
A member of Design Hotels, Somewhere has 20 standalone villas cascading down the hillside, some with a private plunge pool, floor-to-ceiling windows and luxe interiors full of local handicrafts. No TVs, and that’s entirely the point. The infinity pool and restaurant terrace sit at the heart, with an Indonesian-fusion menu serving incredible plates like ginger soy beef tataki, turmeric chicken skewers, and a jackfruit rendang. The onsite spa has a devoted following too.
A complimentary shuttle runs daily into Kuta town, which makes the clifftop location feel effortless and not too remote. Fair warning: there are a lot of stairs between villas and reception, so request an upper villa if that’s a concern.
Best for: Couples and surfers who want seclusion with serious style.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 3,500,000
Address: Are Guling Bay, Prabu, Lombok (10 minutes from Kuta town)
3. Amber Lombok Beach Resort
Beachfront resort with ocean-view villas, cultural experiences and direct beach access.

Amber Lombok Beach Resort sits right on the beach at Torok Bay – one of the most beautiful and unspoiled stretches of Lombok’s southern coastline. From the moment you arrive, you can’t help but exhale. The beach is calm, the team is lovely, and there’s plenty happening to fill your days. Think resort experiences, afternoons by the pool, and world-class surf nearby.
The beachfront suites and villas are all about coastal immersion, with direct beach access, open-air living, and sea views from bed. But Amber does more than most beach resorts. There are weekly cultural experiences that bring the local community in, like buffalo parades, traditional hand weaving demonstrations, and live acoustic music in the evenings.
The dining calendar is equally active. There are BBQ nights, live pasta, oyster days, sangria sundowners, plus floating breakfasts, beach picnics and romantic dinners for those marking something special. A spa, yoga and gym are also on hand for anyone who wants more than horizontal beach time. This resort might be further from the busier parts of town, but the full range of facilities means nothing is missing.
Best for: Couples, honeymooners, and anyone after a beachfront stay with real soul.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 1,100,000
Address: Torok Bay, Montong Ajan, Lombok
Book Amber Lombok Beach Resort
4. Segara Lombok Beach Resort
A beachfront resort with thatched bungalows, great food and access to Serangan’s surf break.

Bright white sands, a sparkling ocean and untouched natural surroundings. Segara Lombok Beach Resort‘s luxurious bungalows with natural thatched roofs sit in front of an infinity pool overlooking Serangan Bay and a world-class surf break. Situated slightly out of town in the peaceful village of Serangan, it’s the perfect place to switch off completely.
Best for: Surfers, beachfront bungalow lovers.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 2,300,000
Address: Serangan Beach, Selong Belanak, Lombok
Book Segara Lombok Beach Resort
5. Sikara Lombok Hotel
Affordable boutique hotel in central Kuta Lombok with modern rooms, tropical pool and great value.

Nestled between palm trees and lush gardens in central Kuta, Sikara Lombok Hotel is a tropical yet modern hotel with great value. If you can, grab the 40-square-metre Supreme Room. It has its own private terrace, extra space and giant bathtub. The tranquil tropical pool is the main hub, and there’s a restaurant onsite serving decent food.
Best for: Affordable rooms in a central location.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 1,100,000
Address: Jl Mawun, Kuta, Lombok
6. Rawa Lombok
Budget-friendly hotel in Kuta Lombok with a rooftop pool, stylish rooms and top-rated restaurant.

A boutique hotel with a rustic-modern feel, Rawa Lombok is centrally located within walking distance to the beach and main strip. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully furnished, and I recommend ‘upgrading’ to the upper-level rooms, as they feel fresher and much larger. I particularly love how cold the air-con is, how hot the showers are, and the big TVs pre-loaded with movies. Sip a cocktail at the rooftop bar and pool as the sun goes down, then head downstairs to Markisa (arguably the best restaurant in town) for dinner. It’s great value.
Best for: A budget-friendly stay in central Kuta, with super cold air-con.
Price per night: Starting from IDR 650,000
Address: Jl Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
The best brunch cafes in Kuta Lombok
The cafe scene in Kuta Lombok has exploded in recent years. Whether you’re after a flat white, a smoothie bowl or a laptop-friendly spot to work from, here’s where to head for a great breakfast or brunch.
1. Kenza
Trendy Kuta Lombok cafe with air-conditioning, healthy brunch bowls, vegan options and great coffee.

You can’t miss Kenza — it sits on the corner of Kuta Lombok’s main intersection in a gorgeous, bright-white building that’s always buzzing. I always head here after a surf because it’s one of the few cafes in town with air-conditioning. Inside it’s cool and chic, but still laid-back enough that you can turn up with salty hair.
The food matches the setting. I’ve had one of the best breakfast bowls in town here: scrambled tofu, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, avocado and a slick of tahini. Their smoothie bowls and sourdough toasts with poached eggs are equally good. Great options for vegetarians and vegans, fair prices, and the coffee is reliably strong.
Best for: Post-surf brunches, digital nomads, air-conditioned interiors.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 55,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 5, Kuta, Lombok
2. Bush Radio
An industrial cafe in Kuta Lombok serving great sandwiches, burgers and coffee.

An industrial-chic warehouse cafe with friendly, fun, laid-back vibes, Bush Radio serves seriously tasty food. In fact, it’s one of the most popular places in town. Breakfast is all about sandwiches, smoothie bowls and juices, while lunch time is much heartier. Everything is homemade and fresh, and their home-baked sourdough is a standout. It’s home to the best veggie burger I’ve ever tried!
Best for: Great coffee, hearty brunch food and epic burgers.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 55,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
3. Milk
Aussie-style cafe in Kuta Lombok with specialty coffee, smoothie bowls and classic brunch favourites.

Rise and shine at Milk for darn good coffee and classic Aussie brekkie combos in tropical homely surroundings. Think avo toast, BLTA sandwiches and colourful smoothie bowls. Coffee is their thing, using quality beans from Expat Roasters, brewed properly.
Best for: Expertly brewed coffee.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 70,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 88, Kuta, Lombok
4. Bara
Poolside cafe and bar in Kuta Lombok with bakery treats, cocktails and all-day dining.

Pool club meets cafe and restaurant. Start the morning with Bara bakery’s famous croissants and a hot latte in the cosy indoor space, then nab a sunbed and graze through the lunch menu as the day goes on. Share plates, crave-worthy bites, happy hours, and occasional live music – it’s a top spot when you never want to leave the pool (and honestly, why should you?).
Best for: All-day poolside hangs.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 40,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
5. Terra
Healthy cafe in Kuta Lombok serving custom bowls, smoothies and rooftop dining.

Eating to live, instead of living to eat, is the motto at Terra. They serve up a colourful array of raw, vegan, vegetarian and plant-based goodness. Whether you go for a smoothie bowl or salad, you choose all the ingredients while the staff whip it up for you. Then, you can enjoy your creation on their beautiful and fresh rooftop terrace.
Best for: Nourishing plant-based food.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 55,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
6. Munchies
Stylish brunch cafe in Kuta Lombok with strong coffee, WiFi and a digital nomad-friendly atmosphere.

One of the most Bali-feeling spots in Kuta Lombok is Munchies. This cafe sits right in the heart of town near Kenza and Bush Radio, with a breezy open-air layout, lots of rattan, and an interior that’s a cut above the average surf-town cafe. It draws a loyal crowd of digital nomads thanks to reliable WiFi and plenty of power outlets, but the food is good enough to warrant a visit even if you’re not opening a laptop. Strong coffee, excellent egg dishes and a solid brunch menu.
Best for: Brunch, digital nomads, and stylish Bali vibes.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 55,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 4, Kuta, Lombok (near Kenza)
7. Folk Cafe
Scenic Lombok cafe with bay views, specialty coffee and light bites.

About 15 minutes outside of Kuta, Folk Cafe is worth the scooter ride for the view alone. With sweeping views over the bay, it’s the perfect spot you pull up, take in the scenery, and order another coffee just to stay longer. The menu covers specialty coffee, smoothie bowls and light snacks — nothing overly complicated, but done well. Come back in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the hills behind you are glowing. A proper hidden gem.
Best for: Specialty coffee with a view, afternoon escape from town.
Price: Mains start from IDR 45,000
Address: Jl Mawun, Mekar Sari, Lombok
8. Nohi
Rooftop cafe in Kuta Lombok with views, smoothie bowls, WiFi and remote work-friendly space.

For views within Kuta town itself, Nohi wins outright. Head upstairs and you’re rewarded with a large, airy space looking out over the surrounding hills and coconut groves. It’s one of the nicest cafe settings in the area. The smoothie bowls are the pick of the menu, with great coffee and something for everyone. Digital nomads will love the reliable WiFi, comfortable seating, good natural light and enough plug sockets by every table.
Best for: Digital nomads, smoothie bowls, best in-town view.
Price: Breakfast plates start from IDR 35,000
Address: Jl Mawun, Kuta, Lombok
The best restaurants in Kuta Lombok
After dark, Kuta Lombok’s dining scene delivers more than you’d expect for a small surf town. Expect Mediterranean share plates, proper Italian pizza, fire-grilled meats and Mexican feasts. And don’t forget the cocktails.
1. Papi Sapi
Flame-grilled steakhouse in Kuta Lombok with premium meats, seafood and daily fresh market selection.

If you’ve spent any time in Uluwatu, you’ll recognise the name. Papi Sapi is one of Bali’s most popular restaurants, and the Kuta Lombok outpost brings the same delicious grill to the south coast.
The concept is built around the showcase: a display stacked with meat, seafood and vegetables, all to be grilled to order. Nothing is listed on the menu because the offering changes daily based on what’s fresh — you browse the chiller, pick your cuts, choose your sides (triple-cooked fries, mashed potato, creamed spinach, harissa-roasted veg) and your sauce (chimichurri, béarnaise, truffle and mushroom, roast garlic butter — the list is long). It’s a nose-to-tail, flame-to-plate operation.
Beyond the grill, there are terrific starters — grilled sardines, octopus skewers, crostini with stracciatella and honey, duck rillettes — and a burger menu featuring the Sapi Penyet: two smashed Australian beef patties, caramelised white onion, American cheese and house sauce. As for the dessert, the Basque burnt cheesecake and lemon meringue tart are next level.
Best for: Meat lovers, group dinners and date nights.
Price: Mains vary by weight; burgers from IDR 100,000
Address: Jl Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
Book Papi Sapi Papi Sapi Lombok Menu
2. El Bazar
Mediterranean restaurant in Kuta Lombok with wood-fired dishes, cocktails and a stylish courtyard.

A Kuta Lombok institution. Step into El Bazar and choose your spot: the terrace, the salon, or the peaceful courtyard out back with its fountain and fairy lights. The open kitchen with its Santa Maria grill is doing serious work — Mediterranean and Moroccan favourites kissed by fire. Check out the wine cellar, or go for one of their signature cocktails. Longstanding for a reason.
Best for: Grilled Mediterranean food.
Price: Mains start from IDR 180,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 5, Kuta, Lombok
3. Cantina Mexicana
Lively Mexican restaurant in Kuta Lombok with tacos, margaritas, live music and vibrant nightlife.

Cantina Mexicana is a technicoloured backyard cantina fuelled by epic margaritas, ice-cold beer buckets and live music. Fill up on family-sized nacho plates, cheesy enchiladas, and whatever you do, don’t skip the deep-fried ‘puffy’ taco menu. Finish with churros, and of course, a round of margaritas. It’s colourful, loud and a very Mexican night out.
Best for: Mexican feasts and margaritas.
Price: Large plates start from IDR 45,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 6, Kuta, Lombok
Book Cantina Mexicana Cantina Mexicana Menu
4. Mama Pizza
Popular Italian restaurant in Kuta Lombok serving sourdough pizza, handmade pasta and buzzy dinners.

This place is absolutely packed, every single night. With its trademark sourdough pizzas baked in brick ovens, Mama Pizza has quickly become the favourite Italian restaurant in town.
The kitchen uses premium ingredients to nail those Italian pizzas and handmade pastas, just like how nonna makes them. And if you recognise this Italian icon – you’re right, because Mama Pizza was first made famous on Gili Air, and this second address in Kuta Lombok is just as popular.
So much so, you’ll need to book ahead and even reserve dishes in advance if you don’t want to miss out on the deep-pan gnocchi or burrata pizza.
Best for: Sourdough pizza nights.
Price: Pizzas start from IDR 70,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta, Kuta, Lombok
5. KRNK
Casual restaurant in Kuta Lombok for burgers, pizzas, cocktails and lively group dining.

Great tunes, dirty burgers, juicy pizzas, solid cocktails. KRNK is the place to kick off a fun night out — big portions, happy hours, and good energy from start to finish. Round up your mates and go hungry.
Best for: Casual dinner and drinks.
Price: Pizzas start from IDR 60,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 5A, Kuta, Lombok (next to El Bazar)
6. Jiang Nan
Authentic Chinese restaurant in Kuta Lombok serving Sichuan dishes, dumplings and wok-fired classics.

Finding genuinely good Chinese food in a small Indonesian surf town is not something you expect — which is exactly why Jiang Nan has built such a devoted following. Run by a Chinese chef who sources key ingredients directly from China, this is the real deal: Sichuan flavours, proper technique, and a menu that covers the full range from dumplings to noodles to wok-fired mains.
The standouts are the cumin lamb noodle, the kimchi pork dumplings, chilli prawn and garlic noodles, and the mapo tofu. The chicken bao — juicy, golden-fried — have their own fan club. For dessert, the chocolate lava bao steamed buns are as good as they sound. It’s consistently described as one of the best meals people have in Kuta. Book ahead — it fills up fast.
Best for: Anyone craving something completely different from the Mediterranean-heavy Kuta restaurant scene.
Price: Large plates start from IDR 40,000
Address: Jl Raya Kuta No. 1, Kuta, Lombok
7. Markisa Restaurant
Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in Kuta Lombok with fresh seafood, share plates and artisan bread.

The first time I tried Markisa Restaurant at Rawa Lombok, I couldn’t stop talking about the bread. They serve an entire, freshly-baked loaf with every meal, to dip and dunk into real olive oil. Fast-forward a few years, and I found that same bread in Bali at Artisan in Uluwatu. Turns out, Markisa was their first outpost, with Artisan now being some of Bali’s best cafes. The fact you can get this same quality in Lombok? It’s a game changer.
It’s a breezy, semi-open space with no-frills. The magic is on the plate. There are share-style starters (like charred ingredients loaded onto bruschetta), and some of the freshest fish in town. I always order the aubergine crostini, the calamari fritti, and the grilled yellowfin tuna (medium rare). Roll in for lunch or dinner – you won’t be disappointed.
Best for: Group dinners, fresh fish, proper bread.
Price: Mains start from IDR 100,000
Address: Rawa Lombok, Jl Pariwisata Pantai Kuta, Kuta, Lombok

8 Best things to do in Kuta Lombok
There’s more to Kuta Lombok than surf and beaches. Here’s how to fill the hours in between.

1. Hike Merese Hill at Tanjung Aan
At the western end of Tanjung Aan Beach, Merese Hill is a gentle 15-minute walk to the top with some of the best views in all of Lombok. Go at sunset and watch the bay turn golden. From different points along the ridge, you can access hidden coves below — bring water, wear decent shoes and plan to stay a while.
2. Book a boat trip to the Gerupuk breaks
Even if you’re not surfing, a boat trip out to the Gerupuk breaks is worth it. Local fishermen run small boats from the village to the various breaks — it’s a fun, up-close way to watch some serious surfing, and the views of the coast from the water are incredible.
3. Bliss out at Matcha Spa
On one of Kuta Lombok’s main strips, Matcha Spa has an impressive number of highly-trained therapists and a wide menu of treatments: massages, facials, body scrubs and nail treatments. A proper, affordable post-surf recovery session.
4. Take a yoga class at Ashtari
Ashtari‘s open-air shala sits atop the hills overlooking Kuta Bay — one of the most beautiful places to practice yoga anywhere. Keep an eye on the trees during your downward dog: this is prime monkey-spotting territory. Ashtari runs classes at several hotel locations around Kuta Lombok, so check their schedule for details.
5. Work up a sweat at Loka Gym
For the gym-goers who don’t take holidays off: Loka Gym has you covered. Daily CrossFit and Muay Thai classes, plus an adjoining health cafe with a nutritionist-curated menu for post-workout refuelling. Treat it as a balance-out for all the great meals you’re eating.
6. Shop surf gear at Flow Surf Store
If you need to stock up on boards or apparel, Flow Surf Store carries an excellent range of premium brands including Channel Islands and Hayden Shapes, plus the latest in surf and island wear. Great for a browse even if you don’t need anything.
7. Day trip to the Gili Islands
The three Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — are easily accessible from Lombok’s north coast. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Kuta to Bangsal harbour, then a short boat ride across. Gili Air is the most relaxed; Gili T is the party one; Gili Meno is honeymoon territory.
8. Trek Mount Rinjani
Lombok’s volcanic centrepiece — 3,726 metres tall and genuinely awe-inspiring. Rinjani treks typically depart from Senaru or Sembalun in the north of the island, which makes it a two-day trip from Kuta Lombok. Most organised tours include transport, guides, accommodation and meals.
The best beaches near Kuta Lombok
This is what you came for. The coastline around Kuta is home to some of the most extraordinary beaches in Indonesia — and they’re still refreshingly uncrowded.
📌 Quick note: The road to some of these beaches is a mix of sealed and unsealed — a scooter handles it all fine, but take it easy on any gravel patches.
1. Tanjung Aan
The one that gets everyone. Tanjung Aan is a sweeping double bay with two distinctly different sides — one with powder-soft pepper-corn sand, one with finer white sand — and water so turquoise it barely looks real. It’s the most well-known beach near Kuta, but still peaceful enough to feel special. Calm waters make it brilliant for swimming, and it’s right next to Merese Hill for a hike after your swim.
How to get there: 20-minute scooter ride east of Kuta
Best for: Swimming, photos, Merese Hill hike
2. Selong Belanak
A long, gently curved bay with calm, clear water and powder-white sand — Selong Belanak is genuinely one of the most beautiful beaches in Indonesia. The waves are mellow on the inside, which makes it a top spot for beginner surfers, and there are a few warungs and the Sempiak Seaside Resort set up along the shore. Come early to have it almost to yourself.
How to get there: 25-minute drive west of Kuta
Best for: Beginner surfing, families, long lazy beach days
3. Mawun Beach
Sheltered by two dramatic headlands, Mawun Beach is a gorgeous crescent of white sand with calm, swimmable water. It’s one of the prettiest beaches in the area and tends to be quieter than Tanjung Aan. There are a few warungs for cold drinks and snacks, and you can rent a sunlounger for around IDR 50,000.
How to get there: 15–20 minutes west of Kuta
Best for: Swimming, quiet beach days
4. Merese Hill
Not a beach exactly, but it belongs in this section — Merese Hill is the dramatic headland at the western end of Tanjung Aan, and the 15-minute walk to the top rewards you with one of the best views in Lombok. At sunset, the light turns the whole bay golden. From certain points along the ridge, you can also scramble down to tiny, hidden coves. Free to visit, and unmissable.
How to get there: 15–20 minutes east of Kuta
Best for: Sunset views, photos, adventurous walkers
5. Pantai Tampah
A quieter, more secluded beach further along the coast — fewer vendors, fewer tourists, and some seriously beautiful scenery. Pantai Tampah isn’t as well-known as Tanjung Aan, which is precisely its charm. Bring your own snacks and drinks, since warungs are limited.
How to get there: 25–30 minutes west of Kuta
Best for: Quiet beach picnic
Surfing in Kuta Lombok
The coastline around Kuta Lombok has enough variety to keep surfers busy for weeks. There are mellow beach breaks for first-timers, punchy reef breaks for intermediates, and hollow waves for those chasing something more serious. Here’s what’s out there.
The surf breaks
- Gerupuk Bay is the main surf hub, home to three distinct breaks: Inside, Outside, and DonDons. Inside and DonDons are the most popular beginner waves, accessible by a short boat ride from the village. Note: they’re crowded with surf schools and boatloads of students being pushed in. It can get chaotic and dangerous. Outside is bigger with multiple take-off points, better suited to intermediate surfers.
- Selong Belanak is where complete beginners should start. It’s a small, crumbly beach break with a sandy bottom. You can focus on learning to stand up rather than worrying about the wave.
- Tanjung Aan is a mellow reef break inside a wide bay ideal for longboarding, with both a left and a right. It’s one of the most popular spots in the area, so expect a crowd.
- Mawi is one of the most exposed surf breaks, picking up swell easily. It’s an A-frame reef break, with both left and right-hand waves. It breaks onto a sharp live reef, so this one’s not for beginners.
- Are Guling is a beautiful bay with a big channel that splits into a left and a right. The left can get hollow, while the right is fast and performance-oriented. It’s for intermediates and above.
- Seger is the best break within reach of Kuta town. It’s about 15 minutes along a bumpy road that winds around the headland past the new racetrack. There’s a left and a right, with the left being the more approachable.
The best surf schools & surf retreats in Kuta Lombok
With crystal clear waters and a range of surf breaks for all levels, surfing is a must in Lombok. There are many surf camps and surf guiding retreats operating in the area. Here’s my top picks.

1. Roots Surf & Yoga Retreat
Hidden away from Gerupuk’s dusty streets in a tropical corner of the village, Roots Lombok feels like stepping into a secret sanctuary — blooming palms, Pinterest-worthy interiors, and some of the best surf coaching in Lombok. Note: you can’t book nightly rooms here. Roots operates week-long, all-inclusive surf retreats only.
During my stay, every morning started with a homemade breakfast and excellent coffee, followed by surf sessions, restorative yoga in the open-air shala, and afternoons by the pool. The owners and staff end up feeling like family. Perfect for beginner to intermediate surfers, solo travellers and yogis.
Price: Starting from IDR 14,600,000 for 7 nights

Practical information for Kuta Lombok
Best time to visit
The dry season runs from May to September, with sunny days, calm seas and ideal conditions for surfing, swimming and hiking. This is the most popular time to visit. October to April is the wet season — tropical downpours are common, though mornings are often still beautiful. Waves are often at their best during this period for experienced surfers.
Is Lombok safe for tourists?
Yes — Lombok is generally considered very safe for tourists. Standard travel common sense applies: keep valuables secure, stay aware of the ocean conditions before swimming, and be mindful of local customs, especially around temples and ceremonies.
How much does it cost?
Lombok is excellent value. Budget travellers can eat well for IDR 50,000–80,000 per meal, stay in a decent guesthouse for IDR 200,000–400,000 per night, and rent a scooter for IDR 70,000–100,000 per day. Mid-range and boutique options are still very affordable by international standards.
What’s the local culture like?
Lombok’s culture is primarily shaped by the indigenous Sasak people, whose traditions, handicrafts and architecture are distinct from Bali. The majority of the population is Muslim, so it’s respectful to dress modestly when visiting villages or local markets, and to be mindful of prayer times. The local warmth and hospitality in Kuta Lombok is something you’ll notice immediately.
Kuta Lombok pros & cons (and what to know before you go)
Pros: Why people LOVE Kuta Lombok
- The beaches are breathtaking. Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun — the coastline around Kuta is genuinely world-class, and the lack of mass tourism means you can still find stretches of white sand that feel entirely your own.
- No traffic, and gorgeous drives. Once you get out of the town centre, Lombok opens up into something spectacular: wide, smooth roads that wind through rolling green hills and past hidden bays, with almost no traffic. A scooter ride along the coast is one of the great travel experiences in Indonesia. The landscapes are dramatic and largely untouched — it rewards exploration in a way that Bali no longer can.
- It feels like Bali 15 years ago. Kuta Lombok still has the laid-back rhythm that Bali used to have. Locals are warm, things run on island time, and there’s a genuine mix of travellers and community life. You can eat well, surf well and spend almost nothing — or push the budget on a stunning boutique resort with views across the bay.
- The surf is world-class. Gerupuk Bay, Are Guling and Serangan — there are quality breaks for intermediate and advanced surfers, and the surf culture here feels unpretentious.
Cons: What people complain about
- The surf at Gerupuk is chaotic. Gerupuk Inside is one of the most popular beginner breaks in Lombok, so surf schools send boat-loads of students out simultaneously and drop-ins happen constantly.
- Religious and more conservative compared to Bali. Lombok is predominantly Muslim, and fundamental to the culture. Prayers ring out five times a day from the mosques, which some find noisy (pack ear-plugs for nighttime). Keep a sarong in your bag, and dress respectfully when visiting local villages or markets. Unlike Bali, this isn’t where you’ll see people wandering the main street in bikinis.
- The town centre is dusty and busy. The main intersection has charm, but it’s loud, and roads are clogged with scooters. But, head five minutes in any direction and the scenery transforms completely.
- Development is creeping in. The hillsides that once framed sweeping, uninterrupted views of the coast now have construction projects dotting the ridgeline. There’s still enormous beauty here, so visit sooner rather than later if you want to see it at its best.
- The beach in Kuta town itself is average. Don’t base your whole trip on Kuta Beach — it’s functional but not the reason to come. Rent a scooter and get out to the bays. That’s where Lombok’s magic lives.

FAQs About Kuta Lombok
Is Kuta Lombok the same as Kuta Bali?
No — they share a name but nothing else. Kuta Bali is a busy, commercial tourist strip. Kuta Lombok is a chilled, beautiful surf town on the southern coast of a different island entirely. If someone warns you off 'Kuta', they're probably thinking of Bali. Don't let that put you off.
How do I get to Kuta Lombok from Bali?
The quickest way is a 20-minute direct flight into Lombok International Airport (LOP), followed by a 30-minute drive. Alternatively, take a fast boat from Bali to Bangsal or Senggigi, then a 2-hour drive south. Total journey time by boat is around 3–4 hours.
What are the best beaches near Kuta Lombok?
Tanjung Aan is the most stunning. Selong Belanak is the most serene and best for beginner surfers. Mawun is quiet and sheltered. Merese Hill isn't a beach, but the views of the beaches from the top are unreal. Pantai Tampah is the hidden one for those who want to escape the crowds.
Can I surf in Kuta Lombok as a beginner?
Absolutely. Selong Belanak has gentle, rolling waves ideal for first-timers. Gerupuk has beginner-friendly breaks on the inside, with more powerful waves further out. All surf schools cater to complete beginners, and many surf camps include coaching, board rental and guiding in their packages.
When is the best time to visit Kuta Lombok?
May to September for sunny skies, calm seas and reliable surf. October to April is the wet season, but the waves are often excellent and the island is quieter and greener.
How much does it cost to travel to Lombok?
Lombok is very affordable. Food, transport and accommodation are all great value, and you can travel well here for significantly less than you'd spend in Bali.
Do I need a visa to visit Lombok?
Lombok is part of Indonesia, so the same visa rules apply. Citizens of many countries (including Australia, UK, USA and most EU nations) can enter Indonesia with a Visa On Arrival for 30 days, with an option to extend. Always check current requirements before you travel.
