Things to do on Christmas Day in Bali

1. Spend the day at a Christmas brunch
Bali’s best resorts and restaurants offer Christmas buffets with all the trimmings – roast turkey, glazed ham, panettone and bubbles. If you’re celebrating with the family, look for kid-friendly events, Santa visits, face painting, and themed entertainment.
2. Hit the beach
Pull up a beanbag on Seminyak Beach and spend the day swimming, sipping cold beers and building sandcastles. Or, head to one of Bali’s Best Beach Clubs for an all-day party vibe.
3. Have a family day out
Take the kids to Bali’s best family-friendly attractions. There’s Waterbom Bali, Bali Zoo or Bali Safari Park for a full day of fun, or enjoy poolside playtime at Flamingo Beach Club.
4. Treat yourself at a spa
Swap shopping stress for serenity and unwind at one of Bali’s best spas. Book a spa treatment, join a yoga class, or drop into breathwork session. Several wellness retreats will be offering special one-day festive packages.
5. Go Christmas shopping
Browse Bali’s island-born boutiques for chic resort wear, jewellery and homewares. Head to Seminyak or Canggu for favourites like Magali Pascal and Uma & Leopold. Not sure what to buy? Check out our Bali Christmas gift guide. Note – some stores will be closed on Christmas Day, so check ahead.
6. Go for a Christmas surf
Most people are busy with family brunches on Christmas morning, so Bali’s most famous surf breaks are much quieter than usual. It’s the perfect time to score waves in Canggu or Uluwatu, both of which are usually very crowded.
7. Escape to nature
If you’d prefer to escape the holiday crowds in South Bali, venture north to explore Bali’s natural landscapes. Chase waterfalls, visit the rice terraces of Jatiluwih, or hike Mount Batur at sunrise. Just check the weather, because December is rainy season, so you’ll need to keep your plans flexible.
8. Make it a cultural Christmas
Since you’ll be in Bali, add some culture to your Christmas Day celebrations by visiting the most magical Hindu temples in Bali. Try a water purification ritual at Tirta Empul, or visit Uluwatu Temple for a sunset kecak dance.
9. Visit Blimbingsari – Bali’s Christian Village
This West Bali village is home to Bali’s oldest church and the island’s largest Christian community. You still won’t see your typical Christmas celebrations here though. Instead, you’ll get to witness Balinese Christmas traditions, like building the famous “penjor” street decorations or trying special dishes like lawar babi (Balinese pork salad).

Christmas in Bali FAQs: All You Need to Know
Is Bali a good destination for Christmas?
Yes, if you're looking for a change from the typical winter wonderland Christmas. Bali offers tropical warmth, lush landscapes, and island adventures. But don't worry, you can still find familiar celebrations and holiday decor at the bigger resorts, restaurants and beach clubs.
Is Christmas celebrated in Bali?
Bali is a majority Hindu island, so most local people do not personally celebrate Christmas. However, all across the island you will find Christmas celebrations and special events. Luckily for us festive folk, the island’s best restaurants, bars and beach clubs put on incredible Christmas lunch spreads, glamorous dinners and parties every year.
What's the weather like in Bali at Christmas?
The weather in Bali is famously warm year-round, but be aware that December lands right in the middle of rainy season. This means, you can expect to see some tropical rain showers – one minute it’s a downpour, the next it’s dry and sunny.
But don’t let the rainy season cancel your Christmas vacation. These showers are typically short and sweet, often raining overnight or early in the morning. Plus, with daytime temperatures soaring into the mid-30s and humidity levels high, a little rain can be the perfect refreshment during your Christmas holiday in Bali. Pack a poncho, and enjoy the freshness!
Is Bali crowded at Christmas?
Yes, December is a peak tourist season in Bali, often considered the 'second high season'. Holidaymakers flock to Bali from all around the world, so the traffic is notoriously heavy on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Bali's top hotels and resorts are also busier than usual, so I recommend booking your Christmas holiday well in advance to secure the best availability.
Is Bali expensive during Christmas?
Yes. Christmas is part of Bali’s peak season, so prices for flights, hotels and tours are in high demand and generally higher than normal.
Are shops and restaurants open on Christmas Day in Bali?
Most restaurants remain open during the Christmas holiday season, but local shops, banks, and government offices (including the immigration office) will be closed on Christmas Day as it is an Indonesian public holiday.
