Bread might well be an everyday carb, but in Bali, it’s so much more. It’s about sniffing out a still-warm sourdough, slowing down, taking a bite, and wallowing in that satisfying crunch. The best bakeries in CANGGU
1. Wheatfields by Starter Lab
Named after the standard bread-base of flour, water and yeast, Starter Lab is an elite bakery that first opened in Canggu back in 2017. A creative range of doughs are flavoured with rosemary, lemon, seasalt or miso, whilst cinnamon spices up its ‘hundred layered’ morning bun. Top tip: get your hands on your own starter kit that teaches you to make your own loaves at home.

2. Barō Bakery
You can expect nothing but top quality breads at Barō Bakery as its owner, Emerson Manibo, used to work at Tartine, one of New York’s best bakeries. Try the artisanal ancient grain sourdough, sweet potato brioche or coconut milk bread. Flatbread is topped with regularly changing produce, from eggplant with bocconcini, to a rainbow of radishes. Our fave? The bread pudding – it’s finished with zesty passion fruit for a tropical kiss.

3. Farine
Farine specialises in San Francisco-style sourdough with dark rye, sunflower and flaxseed being some of its more exclusive flavours. Baked daily, its bread is the perfect base for a range of sandwiches made fresh in store. Take your pick from roasted chicken, tuna mayonnaise and curried egg with bacon. Avoid disappointment by going early as it opens at 7am and runs until everything sells out.

4. Dough Darlings
Dough Darlings in Seminyak (and in multiple locations across the island) has been hand-making classic and unique doughnuts since 2015. Joining its standard vanilla glaze and cinnamon sugar rings are sweet and salty profiles of mozzarella cheese or ham and egg doughnuts that you won’t find elsewhere. For the not so adventurous eaters, there are also toppings of chocolate peanut streusel, passion fruit or a stuffed cinnamon cheesecake bomb.

5. Livingstone
Priding itself for baking the best croissants in Bali is Livingstone, a café with an extensive array of baked goods and artisan coffee to wash them down with. Apart from its star pastry is a colourful watermelon bread, creme brûlée cheesecake and trendy croffles. Order custom cakes up to three tiers high for a wedding day, or with an edible photo print for a fun celebration.

6. Poule De Luxe
Bringing the best of French patisserie to the island is Poule De Luxe, with its impressive array of macarons, breads, tarts and pastries. You can order up to 30 cream puffs or macarons filled with praline, lemon curd, pistachio or salted caramel. Make sure to pick up one of the bakery’s signatures of apple crumbles, or its decadent chocolate and caramel tart.

7. Baked
Head to one of Baked’s many locations in Bali (Canggu, Pererenan, Seminyak and Uluwatu) for a brunch and bakery stop complete with creamy scrambled eggs and slices of seriously good sourdough. Joining the ranks of almond and chocolate croissants is a flaky coconut counterpart, while other sweet treats come in the form of Portuguese custard egg tarts, banana bread or sticky buns. You’ll want to pre-order your loaves here, because they sell out every single day.

8. Braud Café
Braud is an artisanal bakery that has been baking sourdough and pastries since 2014, before opening its dedicated café six years later. Not only can you pick up one of its signature loaves, but an extensive array of raspberry rose eclairs, dulce crumble bombolonis and a double chocolate fritter grace the displays. 9. The Bakery
Perfect for those post surf hunger pangs is a delectable display of baked goods and artisanal bread at The Bakery in Uluwatu. Joining the ranks of its best seller, the classic cinnamon scroll, is a Nutella scroll finished with a generous lashing of chocolate hazelnut spread. If you’re craving something savoury, Turkish breads come topped with sun-dried tomato or caramelised onion.

10. Rüsters
We know top quality when we see it (and taste it!), so that’s why the bakery at Rüsters in Ubud tops the list when it comes to fantastic baked goods. Not only dishing up delicious cakes and pastries, this bakery is run by Danish baker, Asger Skov Hansen. He’s worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in Denmark, and opened one of the most popular bakeries in Copenhagen, winning multiple national and international baking awards, like the Parisian Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie, AKA the World Cup of Baking. You’ll definitely want to try his sourdough, his citrus tart and the signature baked cheesecake. Or go for one of the melt-in-your-mouth croissants (plain, glazed, almond, citrus and chocolate), made from the finest, imported French butter. Yum!

Nothing says “neighbourhood bakery” quite like the sweet scent of still-warm cinnamon rolls fresh outta the oven. And thanks to the high quality signature cinnamon powder from Sumatra, that’s exactly what you get at Sinamon – an artisanal bakery with the best cinnamon rolls in town. Whether you’re swinging by for a morning coffee or you’re simply craving an afternoon snack, you’ll want Sinamon on speed-dial for their sweet and sticky treats. You can’t go wrong with the OG cinnamon roll (exactly how grandma used to make them!), or try one of the signature flavours – we love the buttery Cream Cheezin’ Roll with a balance of sweet and savoury, or the Berry Love topped with a strawberry cream cheese frosting. Try this home bakery that specialises in egg-free and low-in-gluten treats. Whether you’re looking for apple strudels, bagels, curry puffs or pretzels, this lacto-vegetarian friendly shop has something for you. Bake Pastry and Coffee is a small café with a range of baked goods that you’ll certainly fancy on your next trip through the forests of Ubud. 14. TC Cupcakes Bali
