Hey Kee brings Hong Kong-style dai pai dong vibes and serves classic dim sum, transporting you back to the 80s and 90s.
Hey Kee, known for its seafood, recently rolled out a new nostalgic dim sum concept for lunch, transporting us back to the 80s and 90s. Even though it’s been around for a while, this was my first time stepping into the place, and it honestly felt like I had teleported to Hong Kong. As someone who’s always on the hunt for the best dim sum restaurants in Singapore and Johor Bahru, I couldn’t resist checking out this concept, and here’s my honest take. First impressions: Old school Hong Kong vibes

I gotta compliment the place for its decor. The space oozes old-school Hong Kong vibes, from antique clocks to vintage bicycles and even an old-school hair salon setup. The vibes are on point, with green tables and red chairs, vintage posters of famous Hong Kong celebrities and movie icons lining the walls. It gives off that cinematic nostalgia and cha chaan teng charm.
The eatery captures the essence of Hong Kong’s famed dai pai dongs (open-air food stalls along the city’s streets and alleys). If you grew up hearing your parents play Cantonese classics, this place will hit you right in the feels.
Food highlights: Pink dumplings and unique pairings

Hey Kee serves the usual dim sum classics (steamed or fried) like siew mai, shrimp dumplings and char siew buns. What caught my eye? The vibrantly pink shrimp dumplings ($5.80), skin tinted with beetroot juice. It screamed Barbie to me. Other steamed selections include the shrimp and chive rice rolls ($6.80), aka chee cheong fun. It’s silky smooth with just the right amount of soy sauce.
Their fried dim sum is another standout. The unique fried mango prawn roll ($6.80) pairs the sweetness of the mango with juicy prawns, wrapped in crispy skin. And the crispy mushroom snails ($6.80)? A must-order. It has a chewy mochi-like layer inside, filled with creamy mushrooms and tender chicken. A fun and unexpected combo that works.
Beyond dim sum, there are other zi char dishes on the menu. I recommend ordering the steamed kampong chicken with aged Chinese wine ($33.20). Even on its own, the chicken is tender, fragrant and infused with a three-year-aged Chinese yellow wine. It’d be perfect paired with a bowl of steaming rice.

If you can’t get enough of plushies, the craze has made its way to Hey Kee, too. A collection of adorable dim sum keychain plushies (worth $10 each) will be available to diners, with a minimum spend of $100. The deal starts from 17 November 2025, with different designs released weekly, while stocks last.
Final thoughts
Personally, I wouldn’t travel all the way here due to the location (unless you’re an east-sider), but I can easily see this becoming a go-to spot for families and friends who want a more nostalgic dim sum experience. To enhance the dining experience, they have private rooms, accommodating up to 20 people and equipped with a karaoke system – a hit for older folks. Whether you’re here for the retro Hong Kong aesthetic or the comforting spread of dim sum, it’s a spot that’ll make you linger longer.
So the next time you’re looking for a unique dining experience, pop by Hey Kee for a nostalgic dim sum treat.
