DIY Halloween Costumes
We never pass up a chance to dress up, so of course we’re all over Halloween. But if the costume shop has run out of sizes (hon, it happens) and you’re late to Cold Storage for your last-minute Witch Hat, fret no more. Here are ten fun, fab, and totally DIY-able Halloween costume ideas.
Forget Psycho – we prefer Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds for being the inspiration for a tongue-in-cheek Halloween costume idea. Check out Simple Simon & Co for a lesson on how to channel your best 1960s screen siren being attacked by a murder of rogue crows.
When it comes to dressing up as someone with inimitable style, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo always comes up tops. Her milkmaid braids, signature uni-brow, and vibrant fashion sense – what’s not to like? Check out Beauty Blitz to recreate Frida’s one-of-a-kind hair and makeup and My Poppet for a step-by-step demonstration on crafting a floral crown that’s the perfect icing on your Frida-flavoured cake.
This one is for all you Wicked fans. Forget about Dorothy and her ruby slippers – the Wicked Witch of the West in all her emerald beauty makes for a great Halloween costume. Blogger Jessica Quirk from What I Wore shows that all you need is lots of green paint, a broom stick and perhaps, a great singing voice (for belting out Defying Gravity).
It can’t be Halloween without a spooky and morbid costume. The head in a jar costume taught by Thirty Handmade Days is sure to also garner some (nervous) laughs from your friends. Strap on a trench coat and a plastic tub for a helmet and you will look like the ultimate science experiment gone wrong.
Dressing up as a couple of rag dolls is not only an adorable Halloween costume, it also makes for a fun mother-daughter bonding experience. A Beautiful Mess shows how easy it is – a simple-to-craft yarn wig, a colourful dress fit for a doll, some freckles, and you’re good to go!
Couples costumes are usually so nauseatingly sweet but if they’re as cool as silent film stars Charlie Chaplin and Clara Bow (demonstrated by Salad Shrimp Circus blogger Lindsay and her boyfriend), we love it – no words necessary! And if your friends don’t understand your costume, you can always say you’re zombies from the 1920s. Funny and versatile.
Ask any man and he’d probably tell you that the ultimate onscreen couple is Han Solo and his loyal Wookie companion Chewbacca from Star Wars (yes, we’re just as confused as you are). Strange or not, this couples costume is a great way to score some brownie points with your man. Stuck With Pins blogger Corrine Alexandra shows how a little skin can make your Chewbacca costume a whole lot sexier. May the Force be with you!
