From trip-hop and electronic to psychedelic darkwave, mainstream to underground, Sónar Hong Kong has got a little bit of everything for everyone
If you’ve been keeping tabs on the latest Hong Kong concerts, you’re probably pumped for one of the biggest music festivals in Asia – Sónar Hong Kong 2019 – which is set to return on 13 April for its third edition. This year, the legendary Barcelona-based electronic music festival has invited a fascinating array of internationally-renowned electropop artists and house DJs to Hong Kong Science Park. Who to catch at Sónar Hong Kong 2019
We’re most excited for Thundercat, known as one of the most prominent multi-instrumentalists in the US. Perfecting 70s funk, R&B, soul and jazz as a singer songwriter, Thundercat delivers an incredible body of work and is a frequent collaborator with Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar as well as Childish Gambino.
While South Korean house and techno DJ 박혜진 (Park Hye Jin) and London-based future-pop duo AlunaGeorge are also not to be missed if you are into minimal house and soul future-pop.
Fancy some warm and trippy electronic beats? British trip-hop legend Bonobo can definitely put you in a tranquil state. Aside from all the big names, Sónar Hong Kong 2019 also features a number of up-and-coming artists in electronica and underground music, such as Berlin’s Sous Music label head Anja Schneider, British techno innovator Benjamin Damage and London-based Chinese beatmaker Object Blue; all of which promise intriguing experimental sounds and a mesmerising performance.
Last but not least, if you’re looking to see something that’s a bit more close to home, check out the Shanghai club hero Hyph11E, Taiwanese songstress Scintii and Hong Kong DJ collative/hellraisers Mean Gurls Club. Apart from musical performances, don’t forget to pay a visit to their workshops, spectacular audio-visual performances and explore their new media arts featuring AR, VR, AI.
