Now opened at The Mills in Tsuen Wan, vegetarian restaurant Joie Plant-based Bistro offers a variety of meat-free dishes
With the increasing number of vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong, including our favourite newbies like Confusion Plant-based Kitchen and POP Vegan, you’re hardly missing anything in life even if you decide to go meat-free. We recently visited the newly-opened vegetarian restaurant Joie Plant-based Bistro located at The Mills in Tsuen Wan and sampled some of their most popular dishes.
Joie Plant-based Bistro at The Mills
Featuring a number of cafes, restaurants, retail stores and exhibitions, The Mills – an arts space converted from a 1950s textile mill – has recently open its door in Tsuen Wan. Inside the contemporary complex, we scouted out a modern vegetarian eatery named Joie Plant-based Bistro that provides comfortable seating in the communal area. Offering three sets each day, guests can choose whether they fancy some fresh salad or a hearty pasta dish.
What did we try at Joie Plant-based Bistro?
The vegan linguine with asparagus and cauliflower is one of the signature items at Joie Plant-based Bistro. Made of Shinshu miso, tofu and soy milk, the pasta sauce was creamy, smooth and packed with flavour. With the little touch of asparagus, it added a savory kick to the sweet miso. And what’s the essence of a good pasta dish? The pasta itself, duh. It was cooked al-dente and we were loving it.
Sure, the pasta was a win, so what about the toast? Their toast consisted of baguette, cherry tomato confit (slow roasted tomatoes), avocado, and it came with a side of kale and apple salad. Upon first bite, you could tell the tomato confit definitely elevates the taste – making it more delectable. However, the baguette was, in my opinion, sliced too thinly, so the flavours couldn’t sink in completely. If the slice of bread was thicker and more avocado slices were placed on top, it would’ve been a much more indulgent treat.
Other than savoury items, we’ve heard that Joie Plant-based Bistro is going to incorporate more desserts and sweet treats in the future due to high demand. So vegetarians who have a sweet tooth, stay tuned!
