Stef Lau built her success as a business coach by being consistent and trusting the attraction marketing process
We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a comprehensive digital networking platform (with IRL benefits, too) that encourages connection, business support and community. It is a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented and inspiring folks, so we’ve decided to share the love by interviewing some of the lovely Launchpad members. Looking for inspiration? Check out how Stef Lau, founder of Members to Clients, gets it done like a boss.
How I get it done: Stef Lau
How and why did you decide to launch your business?
Even when I was young, I wanted to be an entrepreneur and change the world. My last job was working for a co-working space running events, facilitating workshops, doing sales and marketing. It was a great success! Until one day I was thinking, “If I am not building my own dream, then I am building someone else’s dream. Is there a way I can create a win-win scenario?” Also, I truly believe we all have some unique experience or expertise to share with the world and help others; I am obsessed with personal growth and entrepreneurship. So I put all that together to start my own “business coaching” business, helping others monetise their expertise. So I am building my dream, as well as I am helping my clients to build theirs. Moreover, to have business breakthroughs, you first need to have personal breakthroughs. That’s why I am so motivated and pumped everyday to be doing what I think is very fulfilling, meaningful, and exciting work.
What does the Launchpad community mean to you?
This community is crucial for me as an entrepreneur because it is a pretty lonely journey as we all work separately; when you are still new, you don’t have a big team but you are facing a lot of struggles that no one understands. The Launchpad community is a close-knit group of local entrepreneurs who can meet in-person to really connect and share our ups and downs. With a community of like-minded people, we can share wins and challenges together and have the accountability and support to stay strong together.
What’s been the biggest challenge on your journey so far?
The biggest challenge—but also the secret to success!—is being consistent. It is hard not to get distracted by ‘shiny objects’ and, instead, be consistent in taking the same actions every day, while having the faith that I am on the right path to achieve my goals. It is very difficult to stay away from other marketing ideas that another method is easier and faster to get the results I want. But if I keep pivoting and changing directions, then I will never reach my destination. Even though it is hard sometimes, I have found success by doing the same thing everyday and trusting that the process will bring me the desired results.
How I get it done: Lightning round
On a typical morning: My routine is to meditate right away to get myself grounded. Followed by a cold shower to refresh and give myself an opportunity to choose to be courageous and embrace the cold. Then I plan my day with the big three: the three main tasks that I must complete. Most days are very routine, which enables me to be consistent in my daily workflow.
On dealing with self-doubt and criticism: As an entrepreneur, I try not to compare myself with other competitors as that’s the worst thing anyone could do. Instead, I like to journal everyday about three wins I have had today to remind myself how amazing my life is. It also helps to go through my long list of students’ wins and testimonials to remind myself that my programme and coaching truly transform my clients’ lives!
On the hardest part about the job: The hardest part is to make the right decision and stay consistent with my actions. The biggest difference between an employee and an entrepreneur is that the former is passive in their actions, but the latter one is proactive and has to make decisions that will affect the business heavily.
On keeping stress levels low: Hiking! Hiking is my favourite meditation to reduce stress! I feel totally alive, reborn and recharged every time I came back from hiking.
On winding down in the evening: I like to catch up with friends or watch movies to chill. My nightly routine is to journal three magical wins from the day, and also journal as a prayer to God. To me, every day is a great day—even if I face challenges—as that day is a gift for me to grow. And I also meditate right before I sleep too!
On the advice you’d give your younger self: “Life happens for me, not to me.” I believe that when I am older and look back at every single event, everything will have happened to lead me to a great outcome. I can only connect the dots backwards, and so far everything that has happened has shaped who I am today. I also want to thank my younger self for making great decisions; today I am harvesting what I want because I planted the seeds three years ago.
