Set in the year 2057, The Stage Door on Mars is a vision of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s grand debut on the Red Planet – a synthesis of traditional Chinese music, creative staging, lighting, and projection. Not only will you be serenaded with Chinese classical music and arias from famous Cantonese operas, you’ll also be taken back in time via cutting-edge ArtsTech to revisit events and landmarks that shaped the past 100 years of musical history.
The programme begins with the 2047 Moon Premiere of “Death of the Princess” from Princess Changping at the glass concert hall of the space station on the Moon, followed by “The Farewell” from Romance of the Phoenix Chamber at the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong City Hall in 1962. Immerse yourself in the musical journey as more pieces take you through the old times of Hong Kong (does anyone remember the Lee Theatre?), before the voyage ends at the Chinese Space Station on Mars in 2057, with the “Reunion of the Sword and the Hairpin” from The Story of the Purple Hairpin.
Let the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra lead the way

Did you know that the HKCO is the only professional, full-sized Chinese orchestra in Hong Kong? Renowned as the Hong Kong Cultural Ambassador, the 91-member orchestra has toured across the world – even the Arctic Circle! In addition to performing both contemporary and traditional Chinese music, the HKCO also commissions new works of different styles. Having commissioned over 2,400 pieces, it’s safe to say that the HKCO is truly the pioneer of the Chinese orchestral music scene in Hong Kong and beyond.
Catch the HKCO live!
Wanna see the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in action? The Stage Door on Mars will be held in the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall at 8pm on Friday 17 March and at 3pm on Saturday 18 March.
