A beautiful business hotel with pools, a great restaurant and rooms with stunning views of the Hong Kong skyline, EAST, Hong Kong is where you need to stay
Tai Koo is my new favourite area in Hong Kong, and East is my new favourite hotel in Tai Koo (to be honest, I didn’t have an old, favourite hotel in Tai Koo, but East would have beaten it anyway).
East has this effortless cool about it that takes the best of ‘design hotels’ (i.e. the design, but not the wank swank, attitude, and typically the abject failure of utility) and combines it with total functionality and comfort.
It’s billed as a business hotel but is big on the pleasure. Read: Concalls by the stunning, bloody heated outdoor pool.
And: Important meetings at this awesome rooftop bar serving a lush list of business cocktails.
And indeed: The unusually good hotel restaurant, Feast, that – yes, okay – puts on a lovely and business-y breakfast where actual workpeople can be seen conducting conversations of some importance, but then turns into this fabulous, gourmandising dinner buffet of Roman proportions.
The rooms, similarly, are fab, although the view is downright distracting and a lot of worktime was spent gazing out at the achingly blue harbour and that amazing crowd of apartment buildings that’s just so damn vibrant and energised and ‘Hong Kong’ that it hurts.

So yes, new Tai Koo fave. I’ll be back for whatever comes first – business, pleasure, or both.
