We already know there are more world-class restaurants in Bali than there are Wayans. This month we’ve covered six new(ish) kids on the block that hit it out of the ballpark.
Hujan Locale (Editor’s pick)
The Mamasan and Sarong family just welcomed a newborn: Hujan Locale is a fresh project of chef Will Meyrick, this time not in Seminyak but in the centre of Ubud. The pretty two-storey mansion looks urban cool on the outside, but inside has the charming feel of Vietnamese colonial chic. The concept is slow food, local ingredients, Asian recipes with a light modern twist, all the while supporting the island’s farmers and artisans. We recommend you start with a celery martini and locally made burrata with Balinese pesto and banana blossoms!
Hujan Locale, Jl Sri Wedari 5, Ubud, Bali. p. +62 036 1849 3092. Open daily from 12noon-3pm and 6pm-11pm.
Lacalita
Neon colours, giant margaritas, the owner with killer charisma and that homemade jalapeño sauce – Lacalita, lil’ sister of Seminyak’s Laca Laca, is the hippest new bar and kitchen on busy Batu Bolong, Canggu. The cocktails are packed with fresh ingredients and spices to provoke your hunger, and the food is perfect for sharing but a fight over the last bit is inevitable. Order in bulk.
Lacalita, Jl.Raya Batu Bolong 68, Badung, Bali. p. +62 036 1711 1027, e. [email protected]. Open daily from 3pm-11pm.
Bambu
The owners of old time favourite, elegant establishment La Lucciola have created another destination venue. There is no flashy sign attracting tourists wandering along Jalan Petitenget, but behind what might look like another villa complex gate, there is a beautiful pavilion standing on a pond of lazy koi carps, and one of the best kitchens in Seminyak, doing true justice to Indonesian cuisine. The presentation of the food is really something: think steamed fish served inside a bamboo tube, with a tiny wooden hammer to knock it out on to your plate!
Bambu, Jl.Petitenget 198, Denpasar, Bali. p. +62 361 846 9797, e. [email protected]. Open daily from 6pm to 12mn.
Le Pirate Beach Club on Gili Trawangan
This is how we all imagine paradise: flawless white sandy beach and baby blue water, palms swaying in a gentle breeze. Just add snapper ceviche with mango salsa, roasted pork sliders, perfectly rare tuna steak and icy beer, all served by the pool. Ah, Gili T – does life get any better? Tip: get here on any of the three local inter-island hopper boat services.
Le Pirate, Gili Trawangan, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali 83352. p. +62 851 0041 6833, e. [email protected]. Open daily from 9am-10.30pm.
The Butchers Club
Hong Kong kings of the burger have landed on Bali! Dry-aged imported beef, custom-baked buns, kimchi in one of the ‘Secret menu’ creations – check our recent review to find out more.
Butchers Club, Intersection of Jalan Petitenget and Jalan Cendrawashi, Seminyak, Bali. p. +62 036 1897 4004. Open daily from 11am-11pm.
Moonlite Kitchen and Bar
What could be sexier than a sleek rooftop restaurant? A rooftop restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean with its tangerine sunsets! The just opened MoonLite sits on top of the Anantara hotel in the middle of Seminyak and offers the best of Pan-Asian delights, meat and fish alike. Order a bottle of bubbles and let the head-spinning view do the rest.
MoonLite Kitchen and Bar, Jl. Abimanyu (Dhyana Pura), Seminyak, Bali 80361. p. +62 361 737 755, e. [email protected]. Open daily from 4:30pm-11pm.
