Last year, Bali's hotels stole the spotlight when Michelin Keys landed in Indonesia. Well... we're not giving it back.
The 2026 MICHELIN Key list dropped on 18 September, and Bali did it again, with eight new hotels earning their first Keys and four old favourites getting bumped up to Two Keys. And not one of last year’s picks lost its Key (yippee!).
You’ve probably heard of MICHELIN Stars, the gold standard for restaurants around the world. Well, the same MICHELIN Guide now does it for hotels with MICHELIN Keys, which go to the stays its anonymous inspectors rate highest. The Keys only arrived in Indonesia last year, when 33 hotels made the inaugural list. This year, 2026, marks round two.
A total of 47 hotels and resorts across Indonesia now hold MICHELIN Keys, and Bali is home to 30 of them, nearly two-thirds of the country’s top-rated stays.
So, what are MICHELIN keys?
MICHELIN Keys are the new, sought-after recognition from the world-renowned MICHELIN Guide, spotlighting exceptional stays from around the world. According to the MICHELIN Guide: “The same way the MICHELIN Star recognizes restaurants for outstanding cooking, the MICHELIN Key recognizes hotels for outstanding stays.”
And to judge a hotel’s worthiness, each hotel is evaluated by MICHELIN’s inspectors, according to five key pillars:
- Design: architectural and interior excellence
- Service: quality, consistency, and guest experience
- Atmosphere: the hotel’s personality and charm
- Value: the experience relative to price
- Connection: to the local culture, environment, and community
The scale is simple but prestigious:
- 1 MICHELIN Key = A very special stay
- 2 MICHELIN Keys = An exceptional stay
- 3 MICHELIN Keys = A truly extraordinary stay
With this system, we finally have a trusted way to identify hotels that offer more than just luxury, but rather, places that deliver a true sense of place, character, and connection.
