With its seafood menu, laid-back lounge and one of the largest wine cellars in Ubud, Hippie Fish is where it’s at for soulful feasts from The Med.
With so many awesome Ubud restaurants on our radar, rarely does a brand new name shoot right to the top of our must-try list. But with a menu that takes us straight to the Mediterranean with just one bite of its Seafood Fregola, well, Hippie Fish has officially passed the taste test – and so much more.
You see, this Ubud newbie has done what few have managed to achieve: balance the soul of the Mediterranean with the charm and beauty of Bali. It’s not just an ‘imported’ concept from overseas that sits garishly in the heart of Ubud – its a boho-chic hub full of culture and character that brings the best of two worlds to one fabulous address, which FYI, is directly in front of the famous Ubud Art Market. And the result? Hippie Fish is alive with good conversation, great food, and a homely, artsy atmosphere…
The Village Vibes
Making the most of its buzzing, downtown address, Hippie Fish brings the excitement and soul of central Ubud into its boho-chic interiors. Awash with wood, brick and rattan, the loungey yet vibrant bar is so inviting, it somehow feels like home – perhaps thanks to the wine cellar that’s one of the largest in Ubud…
Top this up with Hippie Fish’s roster of live music, art expositions, food tastings and more, and this hopping Ubud restaurant has become a melting pot for foodies and vinophiles – a community of connoisseurs, creative minds and international globetrotters – all under one roof.
The Mediterranean Menu
As much as we love the feel and village vibes of Hippie Fish, it’s the Mediterranean fusion menu that’s kept us on our hungry toes. A soulful medley of fresh seafood, locally-sourced organic ingredients and those from-scratch, home-cooked recipes, all of the dishes at Hippie Fish have been inspired by the classic Mediterranean diet, offering an endless number of health benefits, as well as happy tummy hoorahs.
The standouts? There’s an ocean of options here, from the pan-fried snapper with burnt corn and salsa verde, to the signature Fregola that’s like an Italian version of Spanish Paella, muddled with lashings of seafood, rich garlic and fresh basil. Or go luxe with the Pappardelle alla Aragosta – a lavish pasta tossed with slipper lobster, crab ragu and cherry tomatoes. Whatever you choose, Hippie Fish believes that food crafted thoughtfully is food done right, and let us tell you, they’ve got it spot on.
Hippie Fish Happenings
With its impressive wine cellar and eclectic collection of cocktails (try the Kombucha is the New Black or the Barong Ket), it’s no surprise that Hippie Fish is also where it’s at for some Ubud nightlife. For starters, there’s live music every Thursday, Friday and Sunday (think live jazz, funk and DJ collabs) as well as awesome deals on drinks, like Bottomless Gin packages all day every Friday (yes, you read that right!). There’s also the Lunch & Wine Package, where set menus and glasses of vino are insanely affordable, and every evening, it’s happy hour on cocktails from 5pm – 8pm. Yup, you’ll want to settle in for looong and leisurely feasts with friends and fam here, and come back again and again for those vibrant, village vibes.
