Sustainable companies and startups in Singapore we love
1. Shiok Meats
Ever wondered where your shellfish comes from? Shrimp are sometimes cultivated in unsanitary conditions, and this affects the quality of the seafood we eat. Not to mention current practices won’t effectively feed our growing global population. Frustrated by this, Sandya Sriram and Ka Yi Ling decided to create a solution. That meant putting their combined 20 years of experience in stem cell biology fields to use.
This led to the creation of Shiok Meats. Using cellular technology, Shiok Meats cultivates crustacean meat. Think shrimp, crab, and lobster. After samples are taken from healthy shellfish, they’re grown in a nutrient-rich broth. The cells grow in just a few weeks and can be used to create various recipes. The team’s working tirelessly to make the products available to the public. And we’re eagerly awaiting the launch!
2. Nomad Solar Sound
Eco-friendly partying? You read that right. Nomad Solar Sound is the brainchild of the local party aficionados from Ice Cream Sundays. Having thrown many a shindig across Singapore, the team struggled to find sound system solutions. Because of their unique party locations, there’s limited access to power points. But instead of dragging around diesel-powered generators, they created Nomad Solar Sound. But what is the solution, you ask? The solar-powered sound system by PikiP, that’s what. Nomad Solar Sound aims to bring parties powered by sunshine.
The PikiP booth not only has great sound, but it’s also portable and convenient. The speakers charge as long as they’re under the sun. They even retain eight hours of power when it gets dark. But if you want to keep the party going, they plug into a power supply for extra juice. So if you need a party partner that focuses on sustainability, Nomad Solar Sound is your answer.
3. Ento Industries
In case you haven’t heard, food wastage is one of the biggest waste streams in Singapore. In 2019, we generated about 744 million kilograms of food waste. That’s equivalent to two bowls of rice per person! However, Ento Industries is looking to give food waste a new lease on life. This biotech company aims to close the loop on food waste with some helpful critters, aka Black Soldier flies. After chowing down, the insects are turned into animal feed and fertiliser.
4. Ocean Purpose Project
Ocean conservation is probably one of the first frontiers of sustainability. Besides cleaning up waste in our waters, there are many conversations about conserving our marine ecosystem. Ocean Purpose Project is one sustainable startup in Singapore working towards cleaner oceans. The social enterprise seeks to drive ocean conservation through creatively disruptive projects. It regularly organises beach cleanups to clear up the sand. It also has plenty of side projects like converting waste plastic, creating bioplastics, and reforesting coral.
5. Crust Group
Guess what. You can now get your beer and be sustainable too. The food waste fighters at Crust Group are looking to create a more circular food movement. This refreshing alternative beer is made with waste like bread and fruit peels. You can get beers in fun flavours like kaya toast and beerguette. And if you’re looking for a non-alcoholic alternative, check out Crop. It’s a brand under the Crust Group creating zesty sustainable sodas.
6. KosmodeHealth
KosmodeHealth takes its fight against food wastage to another level. It’s looking to make quality plant extracts more accessible to the public and wants to lower the wastage of by-products in the food industry. And for the biomedical industry, it seeks to increase the availability of bio-scaffolding. Phew, that sounds like a huge task. But co-founders Florence Leong and Huang Dejian are looking to make it happen. Want a glimpse into how they’re applying the plant extraction technology? Give W0W Noodles a go. Protein and fibre are extracted from spent barley grains to create these starchless noodles. This means they’re nutritious and diabetic-friendly.
7. Sustenir
Superfoods for super-cities is the name of the game for Sustenir. It grows fresh leafy greens in a controlled environment. This means zero pesticides and 95% less water consumption. Because it’s locally grown, it even generates 92% less carbon emissions compared to imported produce. Growing these superfoods indoors also means consistent production of veggies. This is regardless of the climate. Score! You can find Sustenir-grown kale and spinach at local supermarkets.
8. Vertical Oceans
King prawns grown within a balanced ecosystem that makes them healthier and tastier? We like the sound of that. Vertical Oceans cultivates prawns without preservatives. That means juicy prawns in all their natural glory. The team takes techniques from aerospace and nanotech to boost their own technology. The end result? A tank that’s self-cleaning and self-sustaining. They can even be stacked, which saves energy and manpower. You can order a package of prawns for yourself via the website. The delivery date is dependent on the day of the harvest, so be sure to keep an eye out!
9. Archisen
Singapore-based agri-tech company Archisen has basically done it all. Besides designing and building, it even operates its own high-yield indoor farm. Up to 100 tonnes of vegetables can be produced here in a year! Being able to configure conducive environments means thriving plant life. That also means food full of nutritional value. It even has comprehensive farm management solutions available for partners. Cropdom is a turn-key urban farm solution that uses sensors and data analytics to track and improve farm management processes.
