I felt that the skincare industry was stereotyping us by skin type and ignoring each of us as unique individuals with specific needs.
Tell us your story, how did you get here?
It’s insanity with a purpose. Born with sensitive and eczema-prone skin, I took a radical leap of faith with a mission to reboot the beauty industry. I took a look at my vanity graveyard of products that weren’t suitable for the type of skin I had. I felt that the skincare industry was stereotyping us by skin type and ignoring each of us as unique individuals with specific needs.
I asked myself, “Was there a way to address the specific need of everyone’s evolving skin concerns according to our lifestyle and environmental stressors? How could I increase the efficacy and performance of skincare?”
I made a leap of faith to reboot beauty and launched Skin Inc in 2008 with the world’s first custom serum – customise, don’t compromise.
What impact have you made in Singapore?
The whole Skin Inc team, with our partners and investors, has made an impact by employing many Singaporeans and Singapore residents, giving them exposure to a growing global business. I’m humbled by their contributions over the years.
What does 2022 look like for you?
It’s a year where Skin Inc is making the next level of customisation for each customer possible with the launch of the world’s first 360 wellness and skin health coach app. It’s inspired by wabi-sabi – the Japanese aesthetic that lauds the elusive beauty of imperfection, and the appreciation of natural objects and the forces of nature.
The +SABI AI app is designed with the goal of improving customers’ wellness and skin health. It acknowledges and accepts the beauty of imperfections, like wabi-sabi.
What do you love most about Singapore?
I like the humidity in Singapore as it’s good for your skin and keeps us looking young.
What’s the one product you can’t live without?
Our latest launch, the +SABI AI application and new Tri-Light Skintech device. These inventions form the industry’s first powerful combination that recognises wellbeing is determined by a balance of wellness (mental, physical and emotional) and skin health.
Using artificial intelligence and a series of algorithms, the +SABI AI application analyses consumer patterns by leveraging more than 1.2 million profiles and face scans, to guide customers in tracking and personalising their own wellness and skin health journey.
Who is your Local Legend, and why?
I don’t believe in legends as everyone is a legend in their own way. I do think that women in Singapore are filled with strength and independence. They are my legends.
