Filmmaker, actress and musician

I hope I’ve helped many Singaporeans find their voice and feel less alone in their cultural identity through my work, especially through my comedy.
Tell us your story, how did you get here?
When I was young I always loved storytelling, art and music, and I knew I wanted to do something creative when I grew up. I eventually studied film at university, after which I worked at a local production house, and at a local media company where I pioneered the video team. Throughout that time, I wrote and released a music EP on the side as well.
I’ve since gone independent two years ago, during the middle of the pandemic. That was when I started honing my voice in comedy and creating a lot of my own characters, such as an Asian mum character called Auntie Susan, and a pretentious influencer character called Chantelle, among others. At the same time, I also released a second music album, following which I kickstarted a new comedy-music project with Benjamin Kheng called The Ann & Ben Show.
Within that two-year period, many people have resonated with my work. The support I received was tremendous, which really motivated me to work on something I’d always wanted to do since film school but felt was too tall a task: to create a web series. So, a month ago, I released “Asian Billionaires“, which is possibly the biggest project I’ve ever worked on.
What impact have you made in Singapore?
I hope I’ve helped many Singaporeans find their voice and feel less alone in their cultural identity through my work, especially through my comedy.
What does 2022 look like for you?
Apart from launching my “Asian Billionaires” web series, I recently completed my solo show at Esplanade titled Annette Lee: All-In-One. That’s where I finally got to connect in person with the people who supported my work online over the past few years.
Next, I plan to create more songs under The Ann & Ben Show and release new solo music. I also have quite a few exciting video collabs in the works!
What do you love most about Singapore?
Our food!
What’s the quirkiest thing not many people know about you?
I don’t think this is very quirky but I really dislike capsicum because I think it tastes like fake chilli.
Who is your Local Legend, and why?
If I had to pick one, I’d say Gurmit Singh. He’s definitely a legend in many Singaporeans’ eyes for his iconic portrayal of Phua Chu Kang. But above all and especially after working with him, I’ve found that beyond his exceptional talent, he has such a beautiful and humble heart. He’s not just a legendary talent, he’s also a legendary soul.
