Top movies and shows to binge-watch in April
1. Chefs Uncut
Going above and beyond, Creatorslab is spotlighting Asia’s top culinary mavericks in this unique documentary. We’re thrilled to see local legends Bjorn Shen (Artichoke), Lg Han (Labyrinth), and Janice Wong (2am: Dessert Bar) featured in this series alongside names like chef Ton (Le Du), Pam (Potong), and Jordy Navarra (Toyo Eatery). What started as a standalone documentary soon transformed into a six-part series acquired by Netflix. In each episode, get an intimate look at the chefs and their stories, inspirations, and challenges.

2. Physical: 100 Season 2
If season 1 of Physical: 100 had your heart racing, you won’t believe what’s in store for season 2. 100 men and women in top physical condition will battle it out in a series of activities that will push their bodies to the limit. This season, the stakes are higher and challenges are harder. Contestants include the likes of Kim Dong-hyun (the first Korean UFC fighter with the highest number of wins in Korea), Lee Won-hee (a judo gold medallist), and Anthony Jung (a wrestling gold medallist). The trailer alone is making our muscles feel sore.

3. Shogun
We’ve been hearing brilliant things about Shogun, and we need to tell someone about it. This Japanese-American historical drama is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. We know that show adaptions of books tend to be underwhelming, but the rich storytelling and production value have earned the series rave reviews from fans. The worlds of two ambitious men collide with a mysterious woman samurai. Cue political strife, struggles with faith, and family duty.

4. Ripley
Based on the crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley comes a psychological thriller starring the ever charming Andrew Scott (aka the hot priest from Fleabag) playing Tom Ripley. Hired by a wealthy man, he’s tasked to convince his wayward son to return home from Italy. Little does he know that it’ll only be the beginning of his life as a conman. The book itself explores elements of obsession. So will we be seeing a 1960s version of Saltburn? Possibly, and we can’t wait for it.

5. Extraordinary Season 2
The last thing you want to be is powerless in a world where everyone gets superpowers at 18. Unfortunately, that’s the life of protagonist Jen (Mairead Tyers). With a world full of heroes, you can expect a ton of misadventures. After season one’s surprise twist, you’ll be treated to comedic moments that are funnier than ever. You’ll even be treated to deeper character development and exploration of the superhero world.

6. A Cinderella Story
Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying this modern spin on Cinderella is a core memory for a lot of us. Samantha Montgomery is left to fend for herself after her father passes away, leaving her in the care of her greedy stepmother. An aspiring writer, she works tirelessly at her family’s diner to save money to study in Princeton, a dream she shares with her pen pal Nomad (aka popular school quarterback Austin Ames). You can see where this is going. It all goes down a happy path though, and we can’t wait to watch it all again.

7. Wonka
If you’ve scrolled TikTok long enough, you’ve probably heard a snippet of the catchy Oompa Loompa song floating around. And if it’s stuck in your head, you might as well watch the whole movie! Now exclusively streaming on HBO, catch Timothee Chalamet in all his quirky Wonka glory. The movie explores Willy Wonka’s origin story, showing his early days as a chocolatier as he attempts to pay off his debts.

8. Dead Boy Detectives
Have you ever wanted crime and mysteries solved by spirits? If the name hadn’t already given it away, yes, you can have that by watching Dead Boy Detectives. A la Ghost Whisperer, this new Netflix series follows duo Charles Rowland and Edwin Plaine. They’re ghosts who decide not to enter the afterlife and stay on earth to investigate crimes involving the supernatural with the help of the clairvoyant Crystal Palace. We don’t know much about the show other than it’s based on DC comic characters of the same name, but after watching the trailer? We’re sold.

9. The Brothers Sun
Godfather, but make it the Triad with a splash of comedy. After an attempted assassination on the patriarch of the family, eldest son Charles (Sam Song Li) flees to Los Angeles where his younger brother Bruce (Justin Chien) resides. Unfortunately, this means Bruce’s life is also now in danger. Previously unaware of his family’s ties to the Triad, Bruce now comes face to face with the truth. As Taipei’s secret societies battle it out for dominance, the brothers must work together before someone takes them out.

10. Single’s Inferno: Season 3
We’re not gonna lie – we haven’t stopped talking about this series since it premiered. And we’re constantly on the lookout for the latest news about it. Besides hunky and gorgeous eye candy to admire, there’s so much drama! Makes for great gossip over lunch. In case you haven’t seen this series before, here’s the lowdown: hot and flirty singles are brought together on a deserted island. The only way to escape? Become couples and set out on romantic dates to spend nights in paradise. It’s the one dating show our team can’t seem to get enough of.

11. Lift
The minute we saw Ursula Corbero (Tokyo from Money Heist) on the cast list, we had a feeling this series was going to be a heist. And we were right! Follow along as a professional thief (Kevin Hart) and his team attempt an almost impossible heist. Stealing $500 million in gold from a vault on a plane while it’s en route to Zurich. Expect tension with tight deadlines and almost no room for error on anyone’s part.

12. Maestra: Strings of Truth
A mystery thriller about the world of orchestra music? Colour us intrigued. Maestra Cha Seeum (Lee Youngae) is one of the very few female conductors in the world, and is considered one of the best. Although she boasts the appearance of perfection, living and breathing in the world of music, she actually harbours a dark secret. As mysterious incidents continue happening in her orchestra, she must discover the truth while trying to keep her secret hidden.

13. Captivating the King
We’re seeing period dramas get a lot of love on social media, and we’re so ready to ride the hype. This cruel love story is about a king who finds himself without any confidants. While facing royal and political power struggles, he becomes involved with a woman with a hidden desire for revenge. However, things take a twisted turn as she begins to fall in love with him instead. It’s a Korean drama, so we’re prepared for it to be frustrating and so emotionally driven.

14. La Luna
We’re celebrating a huge milestone as this co-production between Singapore and Malaysia is slated for global release in February. Set in Kampong Bras Basah, the village is shaken up with the arrival of a lingerie shop called La Luna. Although apprehensive at first, the women of the village are liberated and empowered by owner Hanie and her playful designs. However, the leader of the kampong is determined to drive the shop out of the village. Psst: filmmaker M. Raihan Halim based this film on an actual attack against a lingerie store in Saudi Arabia.

15. Death and Other Details
Glitz and glamour isn’t all that’s cracked up to be when you end up becoming the prime suspect in a murder investigation. This American mystery drama centres around Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) who finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. A murder has taken place on a luxury cruise liner, and she now needs to prove her innocence. Unfortunately, that means teaming up with Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), the world’s greatest detective whom she hates.

16. The Trust
We can’t stop watching reality shows that pit players against each other, and this is one of them. On the back of the very popular Squid Game reality series comes The Trust. A group of strangers are gathered together to split a quarter of a million dollars equally amongst themselves. But we all know that’s only part of the fun. Will greed get the better of them as they’re pitted against each other? With the opportunity to vote more people off in exchange for more money, it’s all about relationship building and making sure you have the right friends every step of the way.
