Feast up on these vegan cupcakes at The Cakery and you won’t feel guilty at all
Plant-based sweet treats are just as great, if not better and healthier than the purist form! There are a variety of bakeries offering delicious vegan cakes in Hong Kong, such as Sweet Secrets and The Vege Lab, and if you’re looking for vegan cupcakes in particular, then The Cakery is the specialist. Having launched five unconventional vegan flavours, these pretty cupcakes have been getting a lot of attention lately. And of course, as a dedicated vegan, I’ve had to sample them all and find out if they live up to the hype.
What does The Cakery do?
Hong Kong-based bakery The Cakery is known for its wide range of organic, sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan-friendly products that are made with healthiest ingredients. First opened in 2016 as a pop-up shop at The Landmark, The Cakery can now be found in two locations, including The Landmark and Lee Gardens Two.
What vegan flavours does The Cakery have?
Topped with cinnamon dairy-free cream, the Apple Crumble variety is made with all-purpose flour and soy milk. And it’s my ultimate favourite among all five! The sponge is light and moist, while the inside is super gooey as it’s filled with caramelized apple – a pleasant surprise that elevates the entire cupcake.
The coffee cupcake Cup O’Joe is topped with coconut butter frosting and walnut crumble, which offers a lovely little crunch when you first bite into the cake. For those who prefer a strong coffee taste, Cup O’Joe will definitely tick all the boxes.
Another one of my favourites would be Figging Amazing, which contains no added sugar. Made with fig puree and topped with orange zested dairy-free cream, it delivers a tropical flavour – zesty and refreshing – that I think most vegans would absolutely adore.
One of the most popular items on the menu, the chia seed chocolate cupcake Day Dreamer, is topped with a dairy-free vanilla frosting. It’s a classic flavour that everyone will enjoy, including non-vegans. And here comes The Cakery’s latest invention, Salted Caramel Popcorn, which is a toasty salted caramel cupcake that is decorated with actual popcorn and caramel. It honestly feels like you’re devouring sweet delicious popcorn, interesting.
Both of these cakes have a denser texture as they are made of brown rice flour and buckwheat flour, meaning gluten-free! If you suffer from gluten-intolerance, these two are a great substitute; if not, I’d definitely recommend trying the Apple Crumble and the Figging Amazing first, as they’re just freaking amazing.
