Looking to try some authentic American-style burgers in Hong Kong? Honbo serves scrumptious burgers (with vegan options available) with soft buns and juicy patties
We all have guilty pleasure when it comes to food, whether it’s sampling pizzas at Italian restaurants or cutting though juicy steaks at steakhouses in Hong Kong. Located on Sun Street in Wan Chai, Honbo is an American-style hamburger restaurant founded by Michael Chan, a former doctor. By collaborating with local farmers, brewers and artisans, Honbo makes tasty burgers with freshly harvested vegetables that will make your mouth water for more. Plus, extra point for being one of the cool restaurants with vegan options.
The lowdown on burgers at Honbo
As a vegan in Hong Kong, it’s not easy to locate a quality vegan burger. However, Honbo manages to deliver a vegan version that is aromatic and packed full of flavour. The homemade vegan patty contains ingredients such as mushrooms, roasted eggplants, and chickpeas, and it’s topped with marinated black fungus and pickles. You might be wondering whether the bun is 100 percent vegan, whether it contains any dairy products… Don’t worry, it’s a wheat and potato bun that is surprisingly chewy – even with onion sauce spread all over it. Instead of trying to resemble the texture of meat, Honbo presents a delicious vegan burger at a healthy 310 calories.
While I was devouring my vegan burger, my omnivore colleague gave their signature Honbo burger a try. Unlike a lot of beef burgers – which are overly salty and greasy – Honbo has taken another approach to their burgers. With a soft potato milk bun complementing the fillings and the beef patty, the Honbo burger has achieved a nice balance of meat and smoky flavours. The only drawback is that they’re somewhat on the small side, and we wish to see a bigger portion available in the future.
When you order a burger, it’s always followed by fries. At Honbo, there are two types of fries available: Golden crisp potato fries and thick cut sweet potato fries. While the potato fries are doubled cooked in order to achieve a trademark crispness on the outside; the sweet potato fries, which are made of local sweet potatoes, creates a lovely harmony of sweetness and saltiness. This American-style hamburger restaurant is one that would satisfy burger lovers’ palate.
