Memes have become an indispensable part of our lives, bringing people around the world together through humour, chuckles and tears. With 200 million followers across all social networks, 9GAG, the de facto purveyor of the finest memes, is taking memes further with its first metaverse project, “Memeland”. And to celebrate its launch, 9GAG is partnering with Hong Kong Times Square to bring the world’s first “Memeland” digital wonderland and its NFT collection to life. Memelords, welcome to the Memeland Exhibition!
When memes meet the metaverse
Headquartered in Hong Kong, the global cross-platform content giant 9GAG recently announced the launch of its first metaverse project, “Memeland”, which combines memes, NFTs, and a long-lost tale. The story of “Memeland” centres around 9,999 Captains who are sailing across the Broken Sea to feature sea monsters, and search for the world’s legendary treasure island known as the “Memeland” in the quests for glory, fortune, love and, of course, memes.
With only 9,999 NFTs available, and hundreds of thousands of fans vying to become “Memeland” Captains, the “Memeland” whitelist, aka Memelist, has become one of the hottest items in the world of web3.
Find the large-scale NFT and Meme wall, and Hong Kong-made AiR game
Meme lovers in Hong Kong are now invited to visit Hong Kong Times Square and be the first to experience the world’s first Memeland Exhibition. Until 25 September, fans can delight in games, memes, NFTs, and challenges, all centred around “Memeland”.
At the heart of the exhibition is a 3-metre tall, 8-metre wide NFT display wall, on which fans can view over 30 “Memeland” NFTs. 9GAG has also invited its partners to showcase their limited-edition work, including NFTs by FWD Insurance and Refinable; tear-jerking memes created by MTR; AlipayHK and foodpanda; as well as an interactive NFT display zone by AAX Trends, curated exclusively for this exhibition.
Complete missions and collect game cards for prizes
The Hong Kong-made AiR metaverse game is another highlight of the Memeland Exhibition. A number of experience zones, based on the AiR game, are brought to life with the help of its partners. They include the “Row to Memeland”, a rowing game by FWD Insurance; the “Create your own Mo Sor Wai Mixian”, a mixian creation game by foodpanda; the “Party Fowl” experiential game by Nex; and the global debut of the beta version of “Starri”. Visitors are invited to complete missions in these zones to unlock game cards in AiR, the Hong Kong-made metaverse game.
Visitors are also invited to explore Hong Kong Times Square, and search for the hidden QR codes across different floors to unlock more game cards. Once they have collected all ten game cards, visitors can redeem limited-edition “Memeland” stickers, and Happy Rewards shopping or dining coupons by Hong Kong Times Square.
9GAG x StockX
In addition to its interactive games, 9GAG is partnering with StockX, the marketplace for authentic products of current culture, to display two pairs of customised sneakers featuring a meme character. These sneakers will double as the top prize of the “Your Ideal Sneakers” competition.
Launch of Memeland-edition fashion pieces
9GAG is also launching a collection of limited-edition fashion items based on “Memeland” characters, including t-shirts, sweaters and hoodies, for pre-sale. Buyers can simply purchase with “Memeland” exclusive payment method, AlipayHK, and take them home. What’s more, visitors can create their very own memes at the 9GAG-exclusive “Memeland” photo-booth – an Insta-worthy moment not to be missed!
