Pearl Lam Galleries is presenting Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness, a solo exhibition by Zanele Muholi. Muholi is one of the most acclaimed South Africa-based visual activist and photographer, and this event is a collaboration with the Muholi Arts Project (BaMu).
Following the exhibition last year at Tate Modern in London, this Hong Kong exhibition features over fifty staged photographs of Muholi’s portraits that they have been working on since 2012. Muholi says that these autobiographical and highly personal portraits are the expression of ‘the journey, self-image, and possibilities of a black person in today’s global society.’ A selection of paintings and beadwork that are related to Muholi’s aesthetics will also be on view to provide a broader perspective for understanding Muholi’s multifaceted art practice.
