Tips for a stress-free New Year’s Eve in Bali

- Avoid traffic jams: Bali’s traffic on New Year’s Eve is notoriously bad, especially in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu. Roads can become gridlocked at peak hours, so plan to leave hours early.
- Stay close to your NYE party spot: I recommend booking accommodation within walking distance of your event. Taxis will be hard to find (or fully booked), so staying nearby saves time and stress.
- Pre-arrange transport: Grab and Gojek work well in Bali, but expect surge pricing and delays. You can pre-book BlueBird taxis, or hire a private local driver for the evening.
- Book early to avoid surge pricing: Hotels, events, and even restaurants raise prices closer to New Year’s Eve. Book early and look out for Early Bird tickets to save money.
- Go to day parties if you’re on a budget: Beach clubs like Potato Head and FINNS throw big (and expensive) NYE events. Instead, join daytime crowds, then head to a public beach to watch the fireworks for free at midnight.
- Withdraw cash early: ATMs often run out of money during the holidays. Withdraw what you need a few days in advance.
- Expect fireworks everywhere: Beaches and villages will be filled with fireworks – it’s loud, chaotic, and fun. For free shows, head to Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur beach.
- Look after Bali’s dogs: Fireworks can frighten local dogs. Many get lost or injured during NYE, so keep an eye out for “Lost Dog” posters and help where you can.
- Stay safe: Petty theft can happen in crowds. Leave valuables at home, and be mindful of your surroundings.

FAQs on New Year's Eve celebrations in Bali
What is the weather in Bali like around New Year?

Are there fireworks in Bali for New Year’s Eve?
Yes. The biggest fireworks displays happen at Kuta Beach, Seminyak Beach, and Canggu. Beachfront resorts and beach clubs offer events with private fireworks, and afterparties too. Some of the larger resorts in Ubud may also host fireworks for guests.
How are the crowds and traffic in Bali on New Year’s Eve?
December to early January is the peak holiday season in Bali. So expect heavy traffic around Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu on New Year’s Eve.
Where are the best places to stay for New Year’s Eve in Bali?
- For parties and nightclubs: Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu
- For families & quieter vibes: Nusa Dua, Sanur, Ubud
- To escape the NYE bustle: Travel to north or west Bali
Are there family-friendly or more low-key parties for New Year’s Eve in Bali?
Absolutely. Family-friendly celebrations with oceanfront fireworks typically happen in areas like Nusa Dua, Kuta and Sanur. At some places, there may be fireworks for kids which start earlier, then another one taking place at midnight – it’s best to check with venues directly for specific timings.
If beach parties aren’t your thing, Ubud has lots of elegant dinners away from the bustling centre. They typically include countdown parties that end with fireworks, and these parties are usually more mellow compared to those in Canggu or Seminyak.
How much does it cost to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Bali?
NYE parties at Bali’s top beach clubs cost around IDR 1,000,000 to IDR 3,000,000, with tickets ranging from general admission to packages with premium seating, food credit and free-flow drinks. Set dinners between 5 to 10 courses in fine dining restaurants can go up to IDR 5,000,000.
Do I need to book tickets in advance for New Year events in Bali?
Yes, I would highly recommend booking tickets in advance to score early bird prices. Tickets to popular NYE parties like FINNS Beach Club or Savaya sell out quite quickly, often months in advance!
Are shops, restaurants, and attractions open on New Year’s Eve in Bali?
Yes. Most restaurants, cafes, beach clubs, and tourist attractions remain open. But do note that as it’s an Indonesian public holiday, banks, and government offices (including the immigration office) are closed.
