Hello there, Honey
Lindy Klim runs the global company, Milk Skin Care, with her Olympic gold medalist husband, Michael Klim. She’s the mother of three adorable kids, a former model, and a bona fide Balinese princess, so we were pretty excited to be invited to meet her and the family at their gorgeous villa.
Michael and Lindy arrived back home fresh and glowing after a Sunday morning yoga session to tell us a little bit about their flourishing business and life in Bali.
So Lindy, what was it that bought you and your family to Bali?
I’m half Balinese and half Australian, but grew up in Tasmania and felt a massive pull to Bali. It was a place to regroup and take a break. The kids (Stella 7, Rocco, 4.5, and Frankie, 17 months) can grow up free here and we have the time to be together as a family and also keep the work up. We are so busy in Australia so it’s nice to have calm and normality.
And what’s your day like in Bali?
I’m organized and I like a plan so I drop the kids off at school at 7.45am and do a training session at the gym. Then it’s time for work, generally emailing from my iPad. I then head off to Desa Seni to do some yoga. After that it’s more work until 2.30pm when I pick up the kids.
Then it’s family time. We go and get an ice cream, head to the beach, or the kids’ after-school activities like soccer and swimming.
What do you love about living in Bali?
I love that I don’t care about fashion or make-up when I’m here! It’s also really easy to have friends over in Bali, so we entertain a lot at home or go out to eat.
Can you tell us a few of your favourite places to eat and drink in Bali?
We love Betelnut, and Echo Beach is great on a Sunday – we head to Sate Bali. Karma Kandara is a beautiful place to get away, and Friday nights are spent at either Petitenget or Mama San. Gusto definitely does the best ice cream and Sea Circus does really great coffee. Close to home we like Casetta on Jalan Bumbak for home-style Italian cooking.
Tell us a bit about your Milk products. What can you not live without?
The wet wipes for men (which I also use)! They are double sided so you can exfoliate and cleanse. The sunscreen is really good. I use it every day, particularly since moving to Bali. We developed a baby sunscreen that I use on my kids (especially since I have one that is fair), and we are currently developing a moisturizer for women that’s almost like a mousse. Look out for that one!
What’s the best bit about running Milk?
It’s great having our own business and for Michael and I to be able to work together. I’m the creative side and Michael is the business side. We never really dreamed of having our own skincare range and we didn’t go to university so I’m really proud that we are running a successful company.
So what advice would you give to a younger you?
I was really shy as a teenager and came out of my shell as an adult, especially after meeting Michael, so I wish that had happened earlier.
Advice to a younger me? Enjoy fitting into your jeans when you were younger!
We don’t think you could pack any more in, but tell us what you’ve got planned for the future?
We are looking at a stronger push for Milk into Asia and we just signed with a distributor in the US. We’re also looking at more domestic opportunities. In 2013 we want to spread the word about the brand so we have just launched a new website where you can purchase Milk products from overseas. Plus we’ve just had our re-branding done! I’m also working on my women’s skincare range and an apparel range.
Thanks, Lindy!
