A quick guide to Indonesian coffee
If you’ve been café-hopping around Bali, you’ve probably tasted coffees from all over Indonesia without even realising it. Each region has its own personality; shaped by the climate, altitude and soil, and once you know the basics, it’s actually really fun to recognise which cup comes from where. Here’s a quick guide to the beans you’re most likely sipping around the island:
Bali Kintamani
This coffee is the one that tastes naturally bright and citrusy, almost like the beans have been hanging out with the orange trees (which… they have). It’s refreshing, a little fruity and honestly the easiest local coffee to love if you’re into lighter, everyday brews.
Sumatra Mandheling
Mandheling is the complete opposite. It’s full-bodied with almost no acidity, so it tastes smooth, rich and very comforting. Perfect if you like strong coffee without any sharpness.
Aceh Gayo
Gayo coffee is that perfect middle ground: smooth, balanced and naturally aromatic. You usually get cocoa or gentle herbal notes, sometimes with a little sweetness peeking through. Baristas love it because it works beautifully as both black coffee and in milk-based drinks.
Java Arabica
This is the “easygoing friend” of Indonesian beans. It’s mellow, nutty and a little caramel-like, with soft acidity and a clean finish. You can honestly drink it every single day without ever getting bored.
Papua Wamena
Wamena coffee has this lovely natural sweetness that feels almost honey-like. It’s floral, aromatic and super smooth, a softer kind of coffee that still has depth. If you love gentle flavours that still feel special, this one always hits.
Sulawesi Toraja
Toraja coffees are bold and full of character. You’ll often taste dark chocolate, warm spices and sometimes even a fruity note hiding in there.
Flores Bajawa
Bajawa coffee is naturally sweet, chocolatey and really clean. It’s smooth, easy to drink and often has little hints of vanilla or soft fruit. This is usually the perfect place to start if you’re new to Indonesian coffee,

However, most Luwak coffee plantations in Bali do not adhere to animal welfare standards, and the civets are cruelly kept in small cages. If you're interested in trying it, look for plantations that prioritise ethical sourcing and allow civets to roam freely.
