A musical about Singapore’s very own ’60s cabaret? This April, catch the retelling of the city’s notorious venue in a local theatre production: Tropicana the Musical
Here’s a fun fact: did you know that the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board once conceived the idea of a topless nightclub in the ’60s, because it wanted to add more pizzazz to the local entertainment scene? Whodathunk! Once known as Singapore’s most notorious topless venues, Tropicana eventually closed down in 1989, and the venue has since been replaced by Pacific Plaza Shopping Centre. Wanna hear more about this tale? Then listen up.
Debuting his first musical, award-winning Singaporean playwright, Haresh Sharma, takes us back to the golden era with this flashy adaptation. Based on real events (with some fictional elements, of course), Tropicana the Musical tells the story of this topless nightclub and cabaret that opened at Scotts Road in 1968, as well as the lives of the colourful individuals whose lives revolved around the nightlife behemoth. This technicolor spectacle features the likes of Lim Yu-Beng, Karen Tan and Brendon Fernandez, and is directed by Beatrice Chia-Richmond.
Tropical the Musical, 13-30 April, Capitol Theatre, 17 Stamford Road, Singapore 178907. Tickets are selling from $77 at SISTIC.
