On Sunday, June 8th, local party collective Ice Cream Sundays and Singapore-based record label and DJ crew Darker Than Wax will take their ‘Open Door’ collaborative event series online, with a virtual party entitled ‘Open Door Online’. The event will feature live streamed DJ sets by ICS and DTW selectors, as well as an intricate virtual reproduction of the iconic Golden Mile Tower carpark for ‘attendees’ to interact in. As Singapore’s Phase 2 allows groups of five to socialize but prohibits large-scale gatherings and public musical performances, the two collectives hope small units of friends will come together in person to join the virtual experience from their homes – a novel way to enjoy musical events with mates in the age of COVID-19.
‘Open Door Online’ will take place from 2pm to 6pm.
Gracing the decks for the six-hour live stream are Ice Cream Sundays resident DJs Bongomann, Muto Masashi, and Toppings, as well as Darker Than Wax mainstays A’alely, Daryl Knows, and label co- founder FUNK BSTRD. Meanwhile, fellow DTW co-founder Kaye will be adding to the musical collage throughout the afternoon with live and improvised accompaniment from his EWI (an electronic instrument similar to a saxophone). Together, the crews will be dishing out an eclectic soundtrack traversing the spectrum from funk, soul, jazz, house, to world music and beyond – a concoction that has proven potent at previous Open Door collaborations. Music will be streamed live from Darker Than Wax’s website and Twitch channel.
Building on the success of Darker Than Wax’s innovative BREW Livestream Party, which featured a painstakingly reproduced Chye Seng Huat Hardware, the DTW crew has created a fully interactive replica of the Golden Mile Tower carpark in the online platform Habbo. The carpark has served as the epicenter for countless parties and events in Singapore, including Darker Than Wax and Ice Cream Sundays’ National Day collaboration in 2019, and was the natural choice to transport partygoers back to a time before circuit breaker restrictions. All attendees are encouraged to create an avatar in Habbo to access the full event experience and join their fellow music-loving community in the virtual world. ‘Open Door Online’ is best enjoyed with a drink in hand, so the organizers have tapped beverage partners Lion Brewery Co and NO SLEEP CLUB to provide reasonably priced home-delivery drink packages for friends to share during the event. Lion Brewery Co is well known for its line of refreshing, homegrown craft beers, while NO SLEEP CLUB will be offering exclusive cocktail sets featuring Belvedere Lake Bartezec vodka.
