From Chinatown's Lepark to the great outdoors, this pop-up concert will feature regional and local musicians like Charlie Lim, Vandetta, The Steve McQueens and more
There’s plenty to admire about the Getai spirit – its penchant for pop-up events in heartlands and suburbs, its boisterously festive and campy setting, and how it both exudes and breathes life into rich cultures. Likewise, with similarly spontaneous gusto, the Getai Group has been curating seasonal concerts and gatherings to promote the affluent music and arts culture that we have here. And for the past year, these unorthodox organisers have yet to disappoint – far from it.
Having attracted as many as 10,000 gig-goers from all walks of life, the Getai Group has pulled off all sorts of jamborees catering to a mish-mash of genres. Frequently invading the rooftops of Chinatown (thanks to the folks at Lepark), these promoters have thrown shows like Getai Electronica (featuring synth-pop and psychedelic acts), Getai Ethnica (sounds from different cultures) and Getai Underground (DJs spinning hip-hop and bass music). So what have they got in store this time? Wouldn’t you like to know…
Presenting: Getai Soul! For starters, this first-ever music festival is set to occur not above the streets of Chinatown, but in an outdoor park setting as teased by promo pics (venue deets TBC!). However, these Getai gurus have finally given us the first wave of its line-up. And judging by these stellar acts, this festival promises to be one soulful escapade indeed. Local faves include Charlie Lim and his superband, The Mothership; Vandetta and her tricksy live-looping; Dru Chen and his sensual guitar licks; seasoned collectives The Good Life Project and Tim De Cotta & The Warriors; and even jazz wizards The Steve McQueens. And as if that couldn’t get any better, Getai Soul is even roping in regional talents like Japan’s Za FeeDo, Jakarta’s Barry Likumahuwa, Kuala Lumpur’s Najwa and many more.
Don’t let anybody say you’ve got soul but you’re not a soldier; this is a call to arms to support local and regional music in one of the most exhilarating ways possible.
Getai Soul, 7-8 May, venue and tickets TBC.
