Borderless is a portrait photography exhibition centred on the blurring and blending of different styles of photography and perspectives from the neon lights of Hong Kong streets and the studio. Borderless showcases multiple images to create movement and drama – the same image in different orientations, different images from the same shoot as a sequence, images from radically different shoots juxtaposed as a sequence. Complementing colours and contrasting subject matter create playful transitions from street to the studio in the same art piece. The artwork also toys with the processes of photography: the thought behind constructing a series of photographs that tell a story, the selection and editing of images from a shoot, how the same image can have different impacts depending on its scale and orientation and how images can be imagined as a double exposure (overlayed on top of each other). Underpinning the exhibition is the artist’s focus on creating a feeling of movement and harmony in contrasts, especially in the strength and fragility of faces, bodies and movements.
About the artist
Dan Cotton is a Hong Kong-based portrait photographer, originally from England, creating mystery, whimsy and drama in his images. Dan aims to put his own borderless and fluid view of the world into his images; where gender and age, the studio or the street, the futuristic or traditional interact. His photographs incorporate a feeling of movement and create harmony in contrasting objects, angles, expressions and colours.
