After my first year of practicing yoga, I felt ready to take it up a notch with a 200-hour yoga teacher training course. But I admit, choosing the right course was overwhelming. But first, some YTT terms you’ll want to be familiar with before you take the plunge.
YTT terms you need to know before enrolling
- Yoga Alliance: The representative of the global yoga community. It ensures that teachers are qualified to teach safely by setting competency standards.
- “Registered Yoga School” or “RYS”: Yoga school that chooses to register with Yoga Alliance. A RYS teaches a yoga teacher training curriculum which is approved by Yoga Alliance. FYI, the schools below are all Yoga Alliance-accredited Registered Yoga Schools.
- “Registered Yoga Teacher” or “RYT”: Those who have completed a yoga teacher training course at a RYS and registered with Yoga Alliance. This could be important for those who want to teach professionally, as some yoga studios and retreats require the teacher to be RYT-certified.
- 200-hour yoga teacher training: no prerequisite; it’s meant for everyone who wants to advance their yoga knowledge. However, it is advisable that you already have established a regular personal yoga practice. You’ll need to complete at least a 200-hour training to qualify as a yoga teacher.
- 300-hour yoga teacher training: “advanced training” for those who have completed a 200-hour training.
- 500-hour yoga teacher training: a combo of back-to-back 200- and 300-hour trainings.
- 50- to 100-hour Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (“YACEP”) training: shorter programs aim at those looking for personal development, learning special skills, or RYTs who want to add Continuing Education hours to their registration.
