Watching a baby turtle take its first steps and first swim has got to be up there on your list of things to do in Bali, right? We think it would be pretty hard to find someone that didn’t fall in love with sea turtles after the Disney classic, Finding Nemo, so when we heard about the amazing experience you can have if are staying at The Oberoi, Bali we just had to share! Queue the ahhhh’s…
The Oberoi, Bali not only boasts lush tropical gardens, a holy lotus pond and various temples in its grounds, but also their own turtle hatchery and sanctuary. The beautiful resort is located on a nearly 500-metre wide stretch of glorious, golden sand, which also happens to be a turtle nesting ground, so the hotel has become very committed to the protection and conservation of these sea turtles and their babies.
So, what happens at the turtle hatchery? Staff of the resort closely monitor the beach for newly laid turtle eggs and once found they will protect the eggs by moving them to the hatchery, away from the prying eyes of greedy predators. Once reburied in a safe and secure plot of sand the eggs are incubated until the eggs are ready to hatch [this usually takes about 45 days]. A baby turtle’s natural instinct is to head for the brightest horizon, which, if left to their own devices, would likely cause them to perish on the beach in the hot sun or in the clutches of a bigger animal, so The Oberoi, Bali turtle sanctuary nurtures the new-borns for 3-7 days. They are fed and kept in a specially built salt-water tanks, until they are strong enough to be released into the Indian ocean with a little help from the guests of The Oberoi.
And that beach walk, aka, the big release, is a truly spectacular moment… and you can be part of it! This year eight clutches of eggs have already been found on the hotel’s beach, and many more eggs are bound to be laid soon. So don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience, book your stay at The Oberoi, Bali now. Please note: The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), also known as the Pacific ridley sea turtle, lay their eggs along Seminyak beach between May and October each year.
