Is this the new retail therapy? Topshop & Topman’s Open House is packed with interactive activities, Instagram-worthy art installations, fashion exhibitions and an online shopping experience like no other.
If, like us, you like mixing up your luxe pieces with your independent labels and great high-street finds Topshop and Topman probably hold a place in your heart for jean, jacket and fun jewellery shopping. Think you’ve got IRL shopping fatigue? The Brit giants just got us excited again with multi-media interactive exhibition happening right now in Singapore. The twist? Both brands are showcasing key seasonal trends through an immersive and interactive experience, where shopping is entirely optional. A non-traditional fashion-slash-shopping experience like no other, there are five rooms of Instagram-worthy art installations, interactive fun and, of course, a bit of browsing when you visit the Topshop and Topman Open House at Beach Road now on until 24 September.
Rocket Man
Make this galaxy filled room your first pit stop. The dark room is decorated with a thick canopy of leatherette, mini studs and twinkling lights to echo the Milky Way. A word of advice, grab a pair of headphones before slipping into the abyss. Then, kick back on a plush beanbag, please your ears with glam rock legend David Bowie’s Life On Mars and feast your eyes with mirror balls. This is an audio-visual sensation you won’t want to miss. Only issue? We think ‘Starman’ would have been more apt than calling it ‘Rocket Man’ – just sayin’.
Royal Heritage
Another treat to tickle your senses, the next zone is packed with optical illusions created from upscaled, floor-to-ceiling vinyl of patterns and design from the latest collection, such as the Prince of Wales checks and tweeds, as well as florals (try to avoid wearing these). Best done with the squad, guests can create their own moving GIFS via the camera booths inside each Instagram-worthy, interactive room.
Youth Clash
A concoction of subcultural references like punk, skate and athleisure, this part of the showcase focuses on self-expression and individuality through style. The half-pipe installation allows guests to display their creativity by grabbing a can of spray paint and graffiti on the surrounding walls – or the pipe itself as we did (skateboards are not included).
Check Mate
This room is decked with hanging woven fabrics from the latest collection, including contemporary unstructured tailoring, smart check patterns, and oversized knitwear in warmer hues. We dare you to walk through the room, touch and weave between materials. It can be tricky to see once you’re in there, so just watch your step, and of course, for other incoming guests.
Autumn/Winter 2017 Collection
To check out the rest of the collection that will be available in Topshop and Topman bricks-and-mortar stores, guests can head over to the open space towards the back of the building. Find the next best thing for your wardrobe, and purchase it on Zalora’s online shopping platform via the iPads that are located towards the end of the exhibition before entering the Topshop and Topman café for quick bites, coffee and ice cream.
The best way to cope a post-event withdrawal? Waiting for your parcel of goodies to arrive at your doorstep.
